Once the capital of the Himalayan Kingdom of Ladakh, Leh was an important stopover point along trade routes between the Indus Valley and Tibet.  Today this Himalayn destination is a popular backpacker hub for  trekking and visiting the surrounding mountains.  Within Leh, the Leh Palace ruins  the Thiksey Monastery, and the Gomang Stupa are interesting places to visit.

While visiting Leh the capital of Ladakh there is no need to buy bottled water as you can purchase refills of pressure-boiled purified water from a shop called Dzomsa (see my review for more details). By doing this you will save money and more importantly you will help to preserve Ladakh's rapidly declining environment. Refills are also available from parachute tents in the Markha Valley. If you are not convinced, just take a walk on the outskirts of town and see for yourself where all the plastic bottles end up. The refills are perfectly safe to drink, I drank only that for 5 weeks and was absolutely fine. It is also a good idea to drink delicious fresh seabuck thorn juice from Dzomsa instead of bottled soft drinks. And you can also get your laundry done in an environmentally friendly way at Dzomsa. It is truly easy, cheap and convenient, so please spread the word.

Leh, and Ladakh generally, are fascinating ... you find a real glimpse of Tibet ... do take your time here ... if you flew in from the plains, and did not come up gradually, acclimatisation is a real issue ... you are likely to be down with nausea and headache for a couple of days ... take deep breaths, drink water, rest and eat light ... do check out the lovely little German bakery in town for a quiet sit down ... and don't forget to say hello to the lone monk boy in a monastery that you suddenly spot after you have trudged miles with nothing in sight ...
