Travel Tips from people who've been to Shimla
Local transport in Shimla is by bus or private vehicles. Buses ply frequently on the circular road surrounding the city center. Tourist taxis are also an option for out of town trips. Locals typically traverse the city on foot. Private vehicles are prohibited on the mall, ridge, and nearby markets. Due to narrow roads and steep slopes, the auto rickshaws common in other Indian cities are largely absent.
Shimla is well-connected by road and rail. The National Highway NH-22 connects Shimla to the nearest big city of Chandigarh. The scenic Kalka Shimla Railway, a narrow gauge track, is listed in the Guinness Book of Records for the steepest rise in altitude in a distance of 96 km[33]. Kalka, the plains rail terminus, has daily departures to major Indian cities. Flights from the airport at Jubbarhatti (12 km away)[34] connect Shimla to Delhi.
From Delhi - Train (Kalka Shatabdi) till kalka & then toy train from Kalka to shimla - Very good ride and scenic way to go to shimla Good tip? (0) Shimla or Simla as the British Raj used to call it. What a fantastic spot spread over each side of a mountainous cavern. the roads are VERY precarious especially in the rainy season. A mixture of Indian, Nepalese, Tibetan people. I think this is the most beautiful place I have ever been to. The main street still has a British theatre and library everything still in situ. The grand hotel still serves tea using silverware! Take as many trips as you can use the locals they are extremely helpfull always smiling probably cause we bring in much needed cash. Go to Kufri see the yaks. Stay at the local Youth Hostel was good value when I was there. Go and see Kitcheners summer house fabulous gardens. What more can I say if you are in India this has to be a stop off don't miss it! Good tip? (0) I think this is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. Clean air beautiful mountains and scenery. Travelling by bus is a bit dodgy in the rainy season. Locals are a mixture of Indian, Nepalese and Tibetan mostly friendly. Simla was a summer outpost of the British Raj it still has the theatre, library and hotel where they serve tea in silverware. Stay in the Y.M.C.A good basic rooms but watch what you eat NO CHICKEN. Visit Kufri see Yaks and the most amazing wildflowers. See Kitcheners house set in fantastic gardens but take time to look at the mountains stunning!! Good tip? (0) Recent Updates for Shimla
