Travel Tips from people who've been to Srinagar
  1. activities: get to bed early. stick to the main roads.that will keep you out of trouble.there is a zero night life unless you like hanging out with the army or the other side.
  2. accommodation: stay only at recommended houseboats- it does get nasty sometimes.never part with your passport. discuss the price for food, laundry and accomodation beforehand. pay only on departure.otherwise, it is a really beautiful place to be in.
  3.  food: the kebab seller on the road towards shalimar garden by the dal lake is one of the best i have eaten. having said that: try an get an invite to a typical kashmiri wedding- now that is mind blowing food.
  4. shopping: the locals are tourist friendly and you will be amazed by the fact that they speak a lot of languages-like almost all touristy cities in india. be open to the fact that you will be conned regardless.
  5. for transportation: hire bicycles. auto-rickshaws (please bargain), taxis (please fix a rate), or catch a lift with the army guys.
  6. women travelers: try wearing full sleeved shirts, trousers and if you can keep your head covered-it'll be great. there used to be a kind of local 'fatwa' against women wearing jeans-but i am told-hmmm its ok for tourists.

Srinigar, the summer capital of Kashmir.... Kashmir is without doubt the most beautiful province of india, and a staying in srinigar is a lifetime memory. it starts already by going there. or you fly or you come of Leh, but most likely you will come from the opposite direction, wich mean that you are entering Kashmir by crossing a mountain.... when entering kashmir, you can see the hundreds of eagels flying above your head. i recomend to stay at Dal lake in one of the hundreds houseboats, staying is cheap. you pay around 100-300 rupies for a night....all meals included. the view is dazzeling, very green and peaceful. alcohol is not on sale, but it does not mean becouse they dont sale it in the shops that you can not find it... just ask the guys who come around with their boats for selling different kind of stuff what you want, and they will get you something like what you wanted...:o)        further you can take the canoo that almost every houseboat has to take a ride around the lake, to view the lotusfields, or just to ride through the small narrow rivers, who are covered by the green trees..  also from here you can arange nice trekking outdoors.... also if you like to smoke ganja, well then you can call it heaven, in kashmir the have the seccond top ganja of the world.... as also the guys from Led Zepplin knowed before, Kashmire is a paradise

If you stay on a houseboat on Lake Dal (and you should as the views and shikara trips a great), beware that your peace will be regularly disturbed by hawkers in boats who will try and sell you everything from jewellery to papier mache.. Some of the stuff is actually very good, but your patience will be tested and if you do want to haggle, aim to pay around 50% or less of the original price.
