India is well known to have many languages and dialects. It has been said by some that the country has around 180 languages and several hundred dialects. Nevertheless, the official language is Hindi. English also has official status. For use in certain official capacities, the constitution recognises eighteen Scheduled Languages: Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.
