Considered one of India's oldest cities and one of the greatest temple towns, Madurai was once the capital city for the Pandya Kings, boasting a cultural heritage dating back over 2500 years.

The city was originally built in a lotus shaped form around the Meenakshi temple.  Numerous other temples exist within the city, hence the association as "Temple City".
Travel Tips from people who've been to Madurai
food is spicy but not curry all the time! alot of rice which true can be annoying! people smiling all the time and colours every where and kids wanting only one thing is to be educated and the scenery is magical! Tea fields EVERYWHERE! rally yummy! so good! Everything is so cheap plus there is this cool tea place where they show you how they make it into our little bags that we buy at the shops! heard of tata tea? thats where its done or dilma tea? Same concept! plus they have coffee beans and you can walk along the fields and there are villiages in the middle of them its so cool! the tea must be good because the cow (which are sacred) eat the tea leaves!!!

When walking to the Sri Maknshi temple in Madurai, completely ignore any people that come up to you regarding good views, or a special entrance, special day...it's all a load of rubbish designed to get you into a shop.
