Candolim is a nice beach in the Nothern Goa. The place has good infrastructure - banks, shops, cafes and restaurants are all in a walk distance. Many options for accomodation.  Pete's shack- one of the most popular shacks on the beach. Food is good there but not cheap. Still in the evenings the place is overcroweded. Panjim is approx. 40 min drive by bus (12 INR). You'll arrive at the Panjim bus station that is close to the Fontain's.
