Theyyam is an incredible Hindu ritual in Northern Kerala where performers dance frenziedly to the sound of wild drumming. The costumes, face and body paint, and especially the headdresses are totally incredible and beautiful. Kannur is the best place to base yourself as many theyyams take place in the surrounding villages between October and May. To find out when and where the next theyyam is on call Kurien (0484 2371761), he knows all about theyyam and will be happy to help. It's worth waiting around for a few days if need be, as Kannur is an extremely pleasant place, with beautiful beaches, temples and the nearby Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. Avoid the theyyam which is held daily in a nearby village, as it's more of a show than the real thing and will leave you disappointed.
