The province of West Sumatra is like a vast and magnificent nature reserve dominated by vulcanoes with jungles, waterfalls, canyons and lakes. This is the homeland of the Minangkabau, one of Indonesia's most interesting and influential ethnic group.  Padang is the provincial capital. Other mayor cities are Payakumbuh, Bukit Tinggi, Padang Panjang, Solok, and Sawahlunto. The fascinating Mentawai islands are also part of West Sumatra but the inhabitants are quite different from the people of mainland Sumatra.

Medan is the capital of North Sumatra and the third largest city of Indonesia with a population of around 2,5 million. The province of North Sumatra is home to many of Sumatra's most popular attractions, including the jewel of the crown, Lake Toba. Other attractions are the Orangutan Rehabilitation Center of Bahorok, the Karo and Batak highlands around Brastagi and Parapat, and Nias islands off the west coast.
