The fascinating Mentawai islands are also part of West Sumatra but the inhabitants are quite different from the people of mainland Sumatra .

To go swimming choose Carlos Beach( around 45 minutes by angkot from Mata Hari shopping mall). There are more tourists there, so locals do not stare at you so much. But be careful with Carlos himself, because he likes cheating people. Always insist on paying when you get the order because Carlos keeps adding up price to your bill.
