If you got a little knowledge about the whole Pompeian history, you can just get lost in the city and discover it yourself.  Very much worth it, with or without guide.

Pompeii is one of those historical sites that when you first step onto the site you are spellbound in wonder. The city is amazingly in tact for having been destroyed by a volcano. Pompeii was once a thriving city during the Roman rule. The city was an outlandish place that was buried and suspended by time. Most of the city still has most of its foundation in tact. The mosaics, the frescos are still there today and to witness how others lived long ago is a fantastic way to be involved with history. I have to recommend this as a MUST SEE! Pompeii takes hours to explore but is definitely worth your time and money. Also you should check out the gift shoppes!  To get to Pompeii you will take a bus near the harbor. Another MUST is climbing Mt. Vesuvius! Now this is a steep climb, but the view is fantastic once you get to the top! I suggest staying on the outside near the railing. The ground is sandy and a bit rocky in some areas. Being near the railing can give you a secure hold as you climb up. Bring some water with you for the climb, just to be on the safe side. You most likely will want to do this attraction first because it closes in the early afternoon. Depending on your physical endurance this climb may be hard or easy. Just prepare for a hard workout going up hill. It's a lot easier going down. You will take a bus to the top. Along the ride open a window and inhale the fragrance that seems to perfume the air. The aroma is from the yellow flowers that populate the mountain side all the way to the top. Do this back on your way down on the bus to relax from your climb. It is definitely one of the many beautiful things about the trip. There are small gift shoppes at the top of the volcano, so bring a little money and get a "You did it!" gift for all your hard work. It is not a dangerous activity. Maybe even bring a walking stick for the climb.
