Travel Tips from people who've been to Sorrento
Sorrento is the gateway to the glorious Amalfi Coast and it's easy to see why so many people who only went for a holiday ended up staying forever. Spectacular scenery and a laid back easy going life style make this place one of my favourite destinations of all time. It's easy to get around - everything is within walking distance. The people are so friendly, and really appreciate it if you at least try to say ciao or grazie, even though they all speak fluent English. The little cobbled market streets encourage hours of happy browsing, and if you don't walk away with at least one bottle of Limoncello, well you're stronger than most! The hot chocolate in these parts is to die for, almost every cafe serves the authentic rich Italian version, and of course you can't leave with out having at least one Napolitana, which originated in this region. The local Chianti is a must try, and a steal at as low as 5euro a bottle. The hop-on-hop-off bus tour is an experience in itself, careering along the cliff face in a devil may care manner. It's 15euro well spent but definitely not for the faint hearted!! Sorrento is a paradise in the summer time and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a truely relaxing and invigorating holiday experience.
What can I say about Sorrento? Lively, quaint, good food, but most of all, GREAT shopping!!! There is a store there that sells all purses for about 15 Euros or less and they feel incredible!! Like real leather! And they are awesome purses too! Never seen anything like it. The best deal I found in all of Italy! When I think of Sorrento, I think SHOP. You can find awesome olive oil there, leather products such as gloves and wallets and purses, and Sorrento is very famous for their lemons. They have lemons that are bigger than even grapefruit- absolutely humongous. They are grown on volcanic soil which is extremely furtile. So they sell all kinds of stuff that are lemon based. Save your $$ for Sorrento!! I wish I had!
This was our home away from home while my husband and I backpacked through Italy. We left and came back to this little town so many times that we were well known with the locals. We loved it because of the amazing campsite (at the end of main sreet and up the hill a kilometre), the 50 different gelato shops, the warm bread and cappuchinos in the morning, and the centrality to many other towns - only a short scooter ride away. The main street is lined with designer boutiques and it shuts down at night to allow pedestrains to shop and eat late into the night. This is a town so comforting that you may never want to leave...trust me!
