Milan is one of Italy's most important cities.  Home to Italy's fashion capital, major fashion houses such as Armani, Prada, and Gucci made their name here.
You can not miss Via Montenapoleone and the Golden Quadrilateral. The Via Montenapoleone shopping district has a dedicated site: http://www.viamontenapoleone.org.  More than that, Milan is also the country's economic capital and home to Italy's stock exchange.  In all, Milan is a thoroughly modern European city with amazing history, architecture, great shopping, and historical venues

If you're planning a trip to Italy, likely Milan will be one of the cities you'll want to consider.  Major sights include the Duomo Di Milano, La Scala Opera House, Corso Buenos Aires, and  Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper.

milan is based on a cross like structure. in order to see all the best things in milan one most start at the san siro stadium also known as Giuseppe Meazza and draw a straight line all the way through to the linate airport. this will makee you see all the hotspots including the historical sforza castle, the city center for shopping and obviously the catherdral the duomo. the other line of the cross is from the duomo going through to the colonne di san lorenzo and the other end of the town towards the central station. through this line you basically stick to the old gates of the rich, noble and medival milan. hence you experience the modern night life following the horizontal lines of the gates while the vertical ones are the lines of culture and history.

Be sure to venture out of the main tourist area, as just beyond the centre one way and the gardens the other there are some really amazing bars, restaurants and shops. They're much cheaper and have a much better atmosphere with mostly locals. Although the designer labels are all within the main square there are some amazing boutiques with gorgeous one off pieces at half the price!
If staying the opposite side of the gardens to the centre (as we were) be aware that the gates to the park are locked after about 11pm and it's a very long walk in the dark when you can't cut through and there were some very shady characters hanging around.
