Present Agrigento is built on top of the old Greek colony of Akragas established around 580 BC. Later on it was inhabited and sacked by numerous other civilisations among others the Cartaginians, Romans, Saracens, Berbers,... despite this there are still a lot of archaeological sites to visit.
Much of present-day Agrigento is modern but it still retains a number of medieval and Baroque buildings.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Agrigento
Agrigento is a farming area, but its mostly known for one thing - Valley of the Temples. In this area on the way to Palermo there are TONS of temples built thousands of years ago by all different societies. Sicily being out in the middle of the Mediterranean every invading people came through and built something! You can stop all day long as you go through this valley and walk through these temples. Take alot of film and or memory cards for your digital camera's.. alot to see and take pictures of. Be careful though, lots of walking, wear good sneakers. Bring something to drink, no stores around (when i was there) to get anything closeby).

Agrigento is famous for its valley of the temples and that alone is worth the visit but for people with some more time I recommend to visit the tourist office and get a map of the city and go and find the other sites scattered around the city. Some of them are actually really quiet and not touristy at all.

When I was there, 6 years ago I could only find 4 star hotels, maybe it has changed by now but check the accommodation before you go. The last trains and busses out of Agrigento leave very early so as budget traveller you don't want to get stuck there.
