Travel Tips from people who've been to Siracusa
There are great beaches in Siracusa. In fact, Michael's mother came from Cosmiso, a very, very small town right outside of Siracusa, and we stayed in the Orchid Hotel, where they had dancing around the pool on Saturday night. It looked like something out of a Fellini film. There are other great beaches on the Northeast corner of Sicily like Capo San Vito.
Funny incident in Comiso. I was waiting for Michael to get out of church and went to get an espresso. There was not one other woman on the street or in the caffe. I asked in Italian "Ma, dove sono le donne?" (Where are the women?) "Sono a casa lavorono?" (They're at home working.) I replied "No e la stessa cosa in America!"(It's not the same thing in America!
Susi Good tip? (0) A must see for the archaeologist in Sicily. If not staying here overnight for a couple of days, I recommend visting very early to really explore the city. There is so much to see. The archaeological park, the catacombs of San Giovanni with its old frescos, the archaeological museum, and then the island of Ortygia joined to the mainland by bridge. In Ortygia, I loved Piazza Archimede with its stunning Baroque fountain and a must see is Piazza del Duomo with the Duomo, Baroque Palace and beautiful church. Go to the harbourfront and you can see the mythical Arethusa spring and fountain.
I would plan it to explore the archaeological park in the morning and have lunch in either of the piazzas Good tip? (0) Sicily's historical city - loaded with archaelogical sites, and especially concentrated in one part of the city... a must see... of course, the city has its other delights too by way of a bustling city centre, fine Sicilian food options and so on... highly recommended stop on a trip to Sicily... do it enroute between Catania and Pozzallo or Noto...
