If you arrive by cruise ship, prostitutes may be the first people you see when you come ashore, regardless of the time of day. Some guy tried to sell me heroin in the open-air marketplace they have for tourists. Everyone we met was hustling or working an angle in one way or another. We were threatened with violence on more than one occasion. I'd recommend giving it a miss, personally.

Jamaica Culture
Kingston, Jamaica
Wear no jewelry or other American accessories. Ladies wear a skirt or dress out of respect for their culture. Try a Ting!

Montego Bay, Cornwall (West Jamaica), Jamaica
The culture capital of Jamaica. Probably the best airport to fly into, Kingston hasn't much in the way of tourist friendly anything, so mo-bay for your sun and fun resorts. Lots of tours collect you from your hotel all across the north coast so it doesn't really matter where you are. I highly recommend a canopy tour (on brochures found in most good hotels) and the trip to Bob Marley's home and grave on Mount Zion, Nine mile. And remember to try 'Jerked chicken' and 'acai and salt fish' two jamaican specialities. Jamaica is not gay friendly, so be warned.

Sandals Shuttle - Mo Bay to Ocho Rios

Included in the price of your Sandals vacation is the shuttle from the airport to the resort. The drive is about 2 hours with a stop at a roadside cafý and craft stand about halfway through the ride. The shops take USD and your should also tip your driver when you reach the resort. Many people complain about the drive and end up opting to take a short internal flight on their return trip. The major complaints: They drive like maniacs there compared to what we are used to in the US. They drive fast and the road is often narrow and very windy. But that is the way of life there and they know what they are doing. I really didn't mind the drive at all. I recommend sitting up front near the driver so you can learn all about the history and culture of the country. If you start talking to him he'll point out interesting thing along the way. They are constructing a new highway that will be straighter and wider, supposedly speeding up the drive, but probably won't be completed until 2004.

Mount Zion, Middlesex (Central Jamaica), Jamaica
High in the mountains....alone narrow dirth track roads is the town of Nine Mile, the birth place of the Bob Marley!! If your in Jamaica this is a must. We took the "Zion Line" bus from Oicho Rios, which I would recommend. It is an old brightly painted bus...just like the ones you would see in movies etc. Bob's music banging out all the way there, there is even an audiovisual and you stop for a snack on the way and a Jamaican lunch on the way home and as much water, rum and fruit ounch as you want while on the bus! You get to see the real Jamaica, the beautiful country side and the way the people live. A guided tour or Bob Marley's house is included and it's to say the least an interesting experience!! the tour is great value for money, excellent fun and you do learn loads about Marley, his life, his home and his music! If you do nothing else in Jamaica you should do this tour!!!!! :) Ya mon!

Don't miss the climb up Dunn's River Falls. Wear some beach shoes (they also rent them there). The park has the bothersome vendors that Jamaica is known for. Take a waterproof camera. Nice way to spend a few hours. I would not recommend young children if you are going to hike the falls.

Blue Hole, Cornwall (West Jamaica), Jamaica
Do not try and be flash and brash with the local, be yourself and do not boast about what you have, that will annoy them and put you at a higher risk of getting robbed. I did not have any problem with this myself but I have heard that you are constantly asked to buy drugs. The local crafters will try and get you to buy there products and can be insistent. Thee is so much to do, water sports, louging on the beach, treking, biking drinking, eating, you name it. The Jamaicans like to deal in American dollars, do not even bother brining any of their own currency. In the tourist areas you will pay for thing, but haggling is okay to do. The food is wonderful, very fresh and tasty. The local food shacks or even the restaurants are wonderful. There are so many things you can see, from Dunns River to snorkelling. There is something here for everybody. You can hire a car or take a taxi, the taxi's can be expensive and the roads are not the best. Shorts and T-shirt all the way. Women travellers may get hassled by the men, but not in a dangerous way. Jamaicans love to party, any place, any where any time

Packing List

Luggage And Bags: Pack light! You won't need much. Bring a bathing suit, a cover-up and one nice dress (or pants and a collared shirt for the men) for your evenings out. Most of the time you can get away wearing just a bathing suit or a pair of casual shorts and a t-shirt.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: If you're doing the Falls tour bring a pair of water socks (you can buy them there for about $13us) or a pair of old sneakers - I used a pair of old Keds and was fine. These will also come in handy if you go mountain biking or horseback riding.

No need to bring your scuba gear. It's included at the resort. And wetsuits aren't necessary. Trust me. I get cold very easily and was just fine.

Toiletries Medical Supplies: I had been warned by a friend to bring a supply of pepto, immodium, etc., anything you think you might possibly need. The reason being, you're on an island so things like aspirin, etc will be much more expensive over there. Even if you never use it it's nice to have it with you. Just buy the travel size.

Sandals provides each couple with a welcome pack that includes healthy portions of shampoo, bath gel, aloe vera gel and lotion.

Don't forget the sunscreen!

Photo Equipment: Bring a waterproof camera - the disposable kind will do just fine. And bring lots of film... It's gorgeous over there.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: All the beach gear you need is provided by the resort. So don't worry about bringing anything yourself.

Food in Jamaica
Montego Bay, Cornwall (West Jamaica), Jamaica
if ur planning a trip to jamaica, i recommend Negril over Montego Bay. Negril has blue blue water, and white white sand. MoBay has golden sand and sometimes blue water. we stayed in MoBay, but went to Negril for the day, and wish we had booked our resort in Negril instead ... way nicer!

Kingston is a poor but freindly city. If you love golf you must go and play White Which a little pricey but worth it for the service and views.
