This little known Norwegian administered island is located north of Iceland and east of Greenland. It is covered by magnificent glaciers, and is home to Beerenberg (2277m), the northernmost active volcano in the world. The island is uninhabited except for a rotating crew of 18, primarily to man a meteorological station and LORAN-C and track weather patterns. There is no commercial activity on island, and the only way to travel to the island is by boat, for which permission must be first obtained by the station commander. The land is mostly a nature reserve with the only animals around being birds and the occasional visiting whales.
If you are planing a trip to Jan Mayen you should bring IS-Binocular with you (IS=Image stabilaizor) for a trip on a cruise ship or Expedition it is necesseary because of rough sea!! otherwise watching the nature by normal binocular is not very funny and can cause headache and other problems as well(like sea sickness etc)
