Not too many travelers make their way to Miyajima when visiting Japan. Those that do usually go to see the Itsukushima Shrine. Travel Tips from people who've been to Miyajima
0168If you make it to Japan, you MUST go see the floating tori gates here. During low tides you can even walk up to the gates. This place was ranked #1 destination in Asia by The Official Government Travel Site. It is also considered one of the three most beautiful places in Japan. You must go & see it for yourself. It is only about an extra 45 minute past Hiroshima. You have to take a ferry out to the island. But once you arrive you will not regret the extra miles you traveled to get there. You can spend half a day there on the island. I rented a bike with my gf, Yumi, and we biked around the whole island. We took a lift to the top of the mountain to see the monkeys. We waited for the low tide and also took pictures under the tori gate.

918118Here is the best place for kids and families at the deer-stocked park with a historic pagoda within. This is where I took my most peaceful pictures.
The Japanese were very curious about our African-American toddler son, but were respectful and polite.
Japan, overall, is the cleanest country I've ever visited.
In bigger cities there are homeless and social ills, but you have to search and pry to find them.

002The easiest way to get over to Miyajima is from a ferry in Hiroshima. There are cheaper slower ferries, and faster ferries. The faster will cost a bit more, but in my opinion it is well worth it. You can ask for a list of times for the ferry at your hotel, or just stop by one of the stops.
