Check out the shopping mall, Akama-jingu, Dan-no-Ura park and the tunnel throuth wich you can walk to Moji, Kyushu under the sea. For accomodation I'd recommend the Canal Bay Hotel (actually a love hotel), though you might need to speak some japanese.

Know for it's Fugu, Shimonoseki is just a short trip on the bullet train from Hiroshima.
