Kawaguchi (川口) is nor really a great area. It is not a bad area by any means, but it isn't great. Located in Saitama (埼玉), Kawaguchi has plenty of pachinko parlors and strip clubs surrounding its train stations. There are, however, surprisingly few women bothering passers-by with offers of "massage" which is always nice when you just want to get home.

While most of Kawaguchi appears to be in shambles at first glance, there has been a lot of work done recently to improve the state of the city. Nishi-Kawaguchi (西川口) in particular has had a lot of work in the past 2 years. The train station has been completely renovated and a new mall has been added along the way to Akabane (赤羽) station.

Nearby Warabi (蕨) offers a definite step up from Kawaguchi and is easily reachable on foot or by bike from Nishi-Kawaguchi station.

Bring the thickest jacket, and enjoyed picturesque scenery from Kawaguchi by going out

Just over the river from Tokyo and pretty convenient, but actually Saitama prefecture (not considered cool).
