Jarvis Island

Briefly colonized from 1935 to 1942 and at one point mined for guano, Jarvis Island is a US controlled 4.5 square kilometer coral island in the South Pacific Ocean. The island is currently administered as a National Wildlife Refuge, accessible only to scientists and educators. Why do these scientists get to go everywhere anyway?

Jarvis Island is a national wildlife refuge under the control of the US, and is off limits except for those with special permits. It is an important breeding area for green turtles and also a major stopover..
