Jordan

Jordan has a rich history and is home to some of the best historical sights in the Middle East. In addition it is a welcoming place for Westerners compared to many other countries in the area. Petra is one of the most spectacular ancient cities in the world and undoubtedly the most famous attraction in Jordan. Founded over 2000 years ago, Petra - one of the updated seven wonders of the world - is a city of elaborate temples and giant buildings hewn out of the sandstone walls of a deep canyon. Watch Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade for a look at Petra. After Petra, the second most popular site in Jordan is Jerash, an excellently preserved walled Roman city that contains a Hippodrome, a Forum and many temples. The setting for another famous film (Laurence of Arabia), Wadi Rum has a stunning desert landscape of sheer sandstone cliffs and ancient valleys. It is the home of several Bedouin tribes and is a good place to camp out among the stars. Madaba contains a very detailed mosaic map of Palestine as well as some ancient buildings. Visit Karak Castle, a crusader stronghold that dominates its namesake city, to see one of the largest castles in the Middle East. The capital Amman has a number of ancient ruins, including a citadel at the high point of the city.

Amman, Jordan
Take a hostel richt in the middle of town and go up to the citadel at evening light. You will see the seven hills of Amman.Enjoy the city by taking the bus!
Wadi Musa, Jordan
You will almost certainly be in Wadi Miusa to visit Petra. The town has many hotels and you can often get a very good deal for lunch as the hotels gear themselves to take advantage of the visiting tourist trade. The visiors centre has good facilities and clean toilets. If you take a horse to Petra, you still have to walk 1km. Make sure you haggle and nevere pay more than $5.
Wadi Musa, Jordan
If you are looking to take the famous photo of the glimpse of the Treasury through the gorge, do it later in the afternoon when the sun is low and the rock takes on its pinky hues. If you take the photos at midday, the rock colour will be washed out by the sun into a bright yellow and your camera won't handle the contrast.
Al 'Aqabah, Amman Region, Jordan
I saw Eilat form there, but never went to israel
Madaba, Jordan
The Byzantine mosaics here are great and the views over the Dead Sea and the River Jordan are quite stunning. On a clear day you can see Jerusalem.
Jarash, Jordan
Amazing Roman ruins and hardly any tourists. The theatres and temples are lovely, but the most impressive part is the forum and colonnaded street. Well worth a day trip from Amman.
Amman, Jordan
Amman has some interesting Mosques and Roman ruins (the amphitheatre is amazing). But in a small country like Jordan it makes a great base. Sites like Madaba, Jerash the Dead Sea are all day tripable from Amman.
Al 'Aqabah, Amman Region, Jordan
Beautiful, balmy evenings are what you would expect in Aqaba. The Gulf of Aqaba is very nice. In less than 50 kms you can cross 4 countries: Egypt, Israel, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. The Jodan border in the Gulf of Aqaba is 35 kms. From Aqaba you can see Isreal.
Amman, Jordan
the mosque, a trip to the dead sea (45 min drive) a trip to the ruines in Jerash, a trip to Madaba- the mosaic in St. geroges church is amazing
Jarash, Jordan
nothing to see but the ruins, cool though together with the festival
Wadi Musa, Jordan
Fantastic archeological site. If you got time, you should stay at least 3 days and visit the less frequented sites like Little Petra or the old trail to the city.
Umm Qays, Jordan
Pack a lunch and look out over Israel, the Sea of Galilee, Syria, the Golan Heights and on a clear day Lebanon! Amazing!
Madaba, Jordan
Check out the church with a really awesome mosaic! Take the back road out of town to see the place where Moses supposedly died.
Amman, Jordan
Very good place to rest during a trip in the Middle east.
Wadi Musa, Jordan
It is important to dress appropriately when in Jordan, especially in more rural areas like Petra. It is extremely hot but you should always keep your shoulders and knees covered.

Women Travelers: Amman is a good safe place to travel for women, you will not be hassled by locals, apart from maybe the occassional comment. However nothing like North Africa for example.
Amman, Jordan
Nightlife in Amman in terms of restaurants and clubs is very good. If you are temporarily weary of all the impressions while travelling in the Middle East, Amman is a good place to unwind. You have the opportunity to relax Europe-style, but still with a strong Middle Eastern feel.
Amman, Jordan
Not far from Amman you have the Dead Sea which is well worth a visit. After a day of sightseeing in the region (Madaba or Mt Nebo in the South, Salt to the West or Jerash and Ajloun in the North, the lowest place on earth is a good place to relax. Experience the bisarre feeling of floating, but don't drink the water... ;)
Amman, Jordan
The Cliff hotel in Amman one of the ultimate hostels and yes Pizza hut do deliver there...
Al 'Aqabah, Amman Region, Jordan
It is possible to cross the border between Israel and Jordan in AQABAH. From there it is possible to go by bus to PETRA.

Western women get ogled... a lot! Dress appropriately
Wadi Musa, Jordan
One of the molst beautiful site I've ever seen. Don't hesitate to go of track and climb. You could easily spend several days in the site, and come back as new items are found regularly.
Al 'Aqabah, Amman Region, Jordan
Very turist city, lost in the desert... When you come by car from Amman (5-6 hours), you arrive by the moutains and discover the see and the beach... Beautiful ! One interesting thing to know: this is a tax-free region... Good to know ! Not yet tested the dive sites... Hope to go back there very soon...
Amman, Jordan
Food is really good and on the cheap side. Make sure the place looks clean before ordering.Avoid Shawarma stores that do not have customers, or ones with excessive customers to make sure the meat is fresh enough, and well cooked.
Amman, Jordan
Grote Westerse Hotels genoeg in aanbieding.
Amman, Jordan
Take a swim in the dead sea
Dana, Southern Desert, Jordan
We stayed for three days in the Dana Nature Reserve and slept in the Rummana campsite (which you need to book in advance). It is in an isolated location with fantastically scenic views. From there you can follow self-guided trails to discover the reserve.
Wadi Musa, Jordan
Wadi Musa is the 'entrance' to Petra. You would need more than one day to visit Petra, and another good way of discovering the Treasury is to do 'Petra by night' (you need to buy tickets for it), it's a great experience! It is also worth spending some time in 'Little Petra' which is further away and less crowded. At the very end of the Gorge there is a narrow/steep climb and not a lot of people realise that you can get on the other side. We heard music so we climbed to see who it was and we discovered a Bedouin. He played for a while and we bought him a glass of tea.
Amman, Jordan
Jordanian people are so friendly and welcoming. We spent hours walking around seeing the ancient ruins. We left here and moved on to Petra.
Amman, Jordan
A rather crowded and messy city by itself but a very convenient base for attractions not just in Jordan but also in nearby Syria, Lebanon and Israel... and a major air hub for Middle East... a swim in the Dead Sea is possible from the Jordanian side too (the Israeli side is more famous) if you take a cab from Amman and ask the driver to take you to it...shared cabs are a good option in Amman for heading to Lebanon or Syria...
Amman, Jordan
Attention should be paid when addressing an Arab. An Arab is called "sayed" (Mr) followed by his given and family names and when on familiar terms by the first of his given names only. When calling an Arab, it is polite to prefix his name with "ya" .... "ya Mohammad"
Jarash, Jordan
ITS AMAZING!!!!! Make sure you see the Temple of Artimus. A tour guide really helps get you to the places you should see, but some people in the ruins will begin to give you a tour expecting money at the end. Many times these "tour guides" are children, and the tours are illegal because they aren't certified tour guides and the tourist police will kick them out.
Amman, Jordan
Apart from being security checked Everywhere, and I mean really EVERYWHERE, Amman is a fantastic place to be.
Madaba, Jordan
Just see it twice: day and sunset! The view will impress you!
At Tafilah, Jordan
The landscape is extraordinary! Make sure to hike in Dana reserved region. People are very friendly. Wear modest and remember ... in Rome do as Romans do.
Wadi Rum, Jordan
Wadi Rum is a fabulous place to travel through. It has huge rock formations that look prehistoric. If you are into unusual landscapes, then this place is for you. You can drive around it in a 4X4 for a great experience.
Amman, Jordan
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Wadi Musa, Jordan
When passing Wadi Musa, be sure to look fast, as it goes by quickly (if you are just driving by). If you are the one driving, stop and take a look- this is NOT a road you want to take your eyes off of; just look at the cars all on the bottom of the ravines as proof!!
Wadi Musa, Jordan
Valentine's Inn is quite cheap ( 15 JD for a double room with bathroom and AC, clean), organises trips to petra, wadi rumm and transport for many other jordanian destinations. provides breakfast/dinner for an acceptable 4 JD per person (food is really good). Nice patio, backpackers from all over the world, comfortable location - I can truly recommend this place.
Al 'Aqabah, Amman Region, Jordan
If you go to the Red Sea, go to Taba and you can do some great trips. One of them is to Jordan, the resort of Aqaba is a great place and from there you can travel on to Petra.
