Kyrgyzstan is a small mountainous country named after the Kyrgyzs, a traditionally nomadic and semi-nomadic ethnic group. Over 80% of the country is covered in mountains and the average elevation lies at 2750m. This has meant an emphasis more on practical and portable structures such as the Yurta, the traditional Kyrgyz home that is used like a tent that has been decorated with hand-made felt carpet and strips. In Jailoo (the Summer Pastures), you will often see flocks of sheep, horses and cows grazing alongside Yurtas. One possible activity is to visit with a traditional shepherd and observe their life; perhaps drink some fermented mare’s milk together. The Ala-Archa Mountain is considered one of the best climbing regions in the world, offering a combination of rock climbing and ice climbing opportunities. In contrast, the Altyn Arashan is a postcard perfect alpine valley, and features stunning views of the Peak Palatka. Nearby, the Arashan River offers a wealth of hot and cold springs surrounded by majestic pines. Kyrgzstan is home to the rare snow leopard, one of only 12 countries in the world where they roam. Whether it is visiting with the traditional and unassuming lifestyle of the nomadic Kyrgyz’s, tracing your footsteps along the ancient Silk Road or exploring the majestic mountains that are part of the country, this accessible and welcoming central Asian nation is ready to discover.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Kyrgyzstan
Okay honestly I love Kant. There isn't anything really tourist here but it is a nice mid size city. If you are here you are probably a German visiting your displaced family members. Go to the Sports hall n the south side of town it is nice and very cheap. It ahs a great belly dancing class on MWF at 7:30 only costs a couple USD for a whole month. Even if you don't speak Russian go and just stand int eh back and have a good time. This place is littered iwth nice cafes and has two places to pay for interent. Don't go to either one. Go to the MAerican Corner in the Library. It has FREE internet with a fast hook up. and they love having a real live Native English speaker in the place. Also, make sure to go to the bazaar and find the Koreans(displaced by stalin... Kyrgyzstan is filled with Displaced people) They got some wicked god and spicy vegtables, meats, and noodles. Fora couple dollars oyu can get an assortment and make a really kick ass meal. Then across from the bazaar is a real grocery store. Stock up on anything they ahve cuz it'll be a while before oyu see one of those again if you are heading east. Good Luck. Good tip? (0) Altynarasan is an excellent place for a rest after days of mountaineering with its hot water springs. Be warned not to stay too long in the strong and hot water or you may feel sick after a quarter of an hour. Down the valley there is a hot spring up on a cliff wall and there is an artificial bowl just big enough for two person under the spring. It's great to take a bath there in the open and the view with the stream and the pine trees ispicturesque. Altynarasan can be accessed from Karakol by jeep in good weather on horseback or by foot. The best is to pack your tent, hire a guide in Karakol and visit all the beautiful valleys South of Karakol. Good quality fresh food can be bought at Karakol market. Also keep in mind that you basically cannot buy trekking equippment in Karakol. If you need gas canisters you should get it in advance in Bishkek. Good tip? The mountain region of the Tian Shan covers over 80% of the country, that's why Kyrgyzstan is somestimes reffered to as "the Switzerland of Central Asia" )) But I'd say it's more unspoiled, natural and unconventional. And lake Issyk-Kul', which is the second largest mountain lake in the world, has got such crystal clear water that you can basically see your feet while swimming. )) And people... They're so hospitable and friendly that you wouldn't want to come back home )) And did I mention food yet? ) It's absolutely delicious!! Good tip? (0)
