Most of the slow boats stop here for the night if you take a two day boat trip up the river Mekong from Luang Prabang to the border of Thailand. There is one main street with shops, restaurants and guesthouses. We were two girls and two guys traveling alone on our boat, so we decided to share the costs of housing.. That was the worst place I have ever stayed in, but we did not have any choice. And basically we needed just few hours to crash. We were warned not to leave expensive stuff in the room as it is a pretty common thing there that you may have your bags looked through while you are out for dinner. Then we went out to eat. I got poisoned with my chicken curry... I was always told that it is better not to go to eat in empty restaurants, but then I learned that it is better not to go to eat in overcrowded places neither.. We were waiting to be served for over an hour and eventually I got my undercooked or last week's chicken. Who knows...I thought it tastes weird, but most of the food tastes weird here. So my upcoming couple of days were not the best:)

You stop in this little town for one night if you take the slow boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang (or viceversa) on the Mekong. There are a few guesthouses and restaurants, but don't forget to get back in your room before 10pm, because after that all the power generators are off and there is no electricity / light in town.
