Part of the Baltic states, Latvia was part of the historical Viking trading route extending all the way down to Greece, where its coast was known as the “Amber Sea,” due to the amount of amber that washed ashore. The Amber Trail is a favourite hike within the Gauja National Park. Latvia is famous for its photogenic castles, of which Rundale Castle, Sigulda Castle and Turaida Castle are among the most striking. Aglona Basilica, Latvia’s most important pilgrimage site and a major Roman Catholic shrine contain one of the country’s oldest organs. Another famous organ is found in Riga, the country’s capital and the largest and most exciting city in the Baltic region. Within Riga, the Dome Cathedral organ holds nearly 7,000 pipes and is recognized as one of the world’s greatest musical instruments. The capital is also renowned for its Art Nouveau architecture, though examples of Gothic, Baroque and Classical buildings also exist. Another town, Kuldiga, is one of the best preserved, containing the few remaining wooden buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Nearby, the Ventas Rumba waterfall may be one of the widest in Europe, stretching 275m wide. Jurmala was known throughout the Soviet Union for its beaches. Latvia is a sparsely populated and unspoiled country filled with natural scenery but at the same time rife with artifacts and reminders from Soviet occupation and the cold war. Its rich history and legend-cloaked castles are sure to capture the imagination of many.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Latvia
Kraslava was granted the rights of a town in 1923. The population in 2007 - 10854. The area - 8.6 sq km Kraslava lies in the picturesque Daugava valley surroundel by dark pine and fir tree forest. Kraslava was mentioned for the first time in documents in 1558, but the town started developing in 1729, when Count Ludvig Plater bought this place. For nearly two centuries the Plater family determined Kraslava economical and cultural life. Craftmen from Poland and Germany in co-operation with local people organized the production of carpets, velvet, silk and cotton material, weapons, jewellery and other goods. The goods were in demand at the four Kraslava fairs and also in Kurzeme, Poland and Germany. Kraslava cannot be imagined without the Kraslava Roman Catholic Church, Kraslava Palace(Kraslava manor building of the Von Plater residence), the library and the water-mill built during the Platres time. People in Kraslava are very proud that in the 18 - 19th century a Ctholic Seminarium functioned here. It was the first establishment in Latgale. The most famous people of Kraslava are the sculptor Naums Aronsons, the writer and philosopher Konstantins Raudive, the writer Cecilija Dinere, the poet Valdis Kraslavieties and the painter Pavils Glaudans.

A good place to stay is the B&B on Gertrudes iela/Krisjanis Barona iela. It only takes two stops by tram to downtown Riga or a 10 min walk in a pleasant area. Accomodation includes free internet, a hearty breakfast always involving eggs and the total price (approx. 50 € per night) is quite reasonable. My room was fine and I had a good/new en-suite bathroom. On the down low: streets are loud and the floor was a bit on the dirty side.

To try typical Latvian food go to the Lido chain: the self service restaurants are charming with their wooden interieur and even without language skills you can try different dishes as you choose them just by looking at the display. You can get a good 4-course meal with a drink for approx 5 Lats. I recommend the cold beet root soup, courgette filled with minced pork (that I got - God knows what else was in there).

If you plan to visit Riga, take three full days. For the accomodation, I recommend KONVENTA SETA, a hotel***(*) in an old convent in the very centre of the city, tidy, convenient... It has no own restaurant, but you don't need one at that place.... there are so many in the vicinity. Close to the hoterl in WAGNER STREET, you will find the SKONTO fish restaurant, one of the best sea food restaurants in the world. I also advise to take advantage of your stay in RIGA to enjoy the rich and high quality musical life : GREAT GUILD CONCERT HALL, OPERA, RIGA DOM ORGAN concerts. RIGA DOM has one of the biggest organs in the world. If there is a concert while you are in RIGA, don't miss it!. Also visit ALBERTA STREET to see an entire street ART NOUVEAU ARCHITECTURE
