Lesotho

Completely surrounded by South Africa in the Drakensberg and Maluti mountain ranges, Lesotho, the “Kingdom of the Sky” is a trekker’s haven situated between 9,000 and 12000 feet. Butha-Buthe is a popular hiking area and reaching the summit gives you panoramic views of the region. Thabana Ntlenyana, at 11,425 feet, is the highest mountain in Lesotho. The mountain range features an extensive network of hiking trails. Along the way you might catch sight of a Basotho shepherd. The Basothos have a number of unique traditions, including the use of woven tribal blankets to signify important milestones in Basotho family life, including birth, marriage, and more. See traditional Basotho huts at Maseru, the country’s capital. While there, be sure to see the mountain fortress of Moshoeshoe. Qacha’s Nek, originally a mission station located near a beautiful pass. It is a popular starting point for many travellers to Lesotho. Other travellers may arrive through Sani Pass, a spectacular mountain road that connects to South Africa’s Natal Darkensberg Park. For those interested in pony trekking, head to Malealea where you start by traversing a plateau with views of misty mountains in the backdrop. Budding palaeontologists should be sure to visit Quthing Moyeni, where dinosaur footprints set millions of years ago are still visible. Nearby, the Masitise Cave House is a museum that gives you an overview of Lesotho’s history and culture. The Maletsunyane Falls is another spectacular site, as one of the highest single dropping waterfalls in Africa. For those interested in setting their own paths, exploring new cultures and who love mountain scenery, Lesotho is a country to consider

You can buy beer, if you can find it.

Butha-Buthe, Lesotho
Butha-Buthe is a small busy town close to the South African border. The best place to go is the market, where in a caravan freshly made delicious scones are made.

Maseru, Lesotho
If you are travelling alone or as a couple or threesome don't stop anywhere in this town. It is dangerous if you are a "white" man. You could be targeted and followed and high-jacked. If you are in a big group, still be cacious and only stop here if you REALLY have to. Rather stop in the smaller villages. Maseru is not a safe place. The rural areas , the people work the land and work hard, they are loving and friendly. Please don't give sweets to the kids. Rather take old clothes with you on the trip and hand these out, or tinned foods. Basutu people have a hard life, but they are amazing people. They will capture your heart if you allow them to. Stick to the rural areas, and enjoy. If you go in winter, expect to see a lot of snow, and maybe even plan an extra day incase you can't get through to your destination due to heavy snowfalls. Asmatics - don't forget your pump. The air is very thin.

Mount Moorosi, Lesotho
Mount Moorosi is a great little place to stay in the south east of Lesotho. Its not far from the main roads so depending on weather and time of year you probably don't even need a 4x4. Accommodation is in recently built thatched rondawels/huts with on suite bathrooms (gas heated hot water). There is no electricity here. Meals are provided on request at the little dining room and the locals who run it are full of info on what to do during the day like pony trekking and hiking etc. they are affiliated to and can be booked through Malealea Lodge www.malealea.com
