Liberia Travel Guide

Initially founded by former American slaves, Liberia has had a tumultuous history. Until 2003, Liberia was war-torn and considered to be one of the most dangerous countries in the world, though the country is now on the road to recovery. Since the end of the war, it has had successful elections and is in rebuilding mode. The ravaging conflict has left deep scars on the country though.  Crime and violence remain major concerns. If you do decide to visit Liberia, you can see the capital of Monrovia and the fine beaches nearby. Monrovia itself is still damaged from the civil war, but you can see the city as it rebuilds. Liberia also contains the Firestone plantation, which is the world’s largest rubber plantation. Other sights include Sapo National Park, a rainforest containing chimpanzees, pygmy hippos and elephants, although this too was affected by the war.
