Liechtenstein

The tiny European nation of Liechtenstein has close political and economic ties to Switzerland, but retains its cultural distinctness. It uses the Swiss currency and postal system, but remains autonomous. Liechtenstein is available to rent out as a country for corporate events, but is perhaps most commonly known for its postage stamps.  They are often very beautiful and entice tourists to make a stopovers to mail postcards. Philatists will enjoy the Postage Stamp Museum in the capital of Vaduz. Also in Vaduz is the Liechtenstein Kunstmuseum, with its art collections. Near the city are multitudes of hiking trails taking you through the surrounding alpine scenery. The ski resort of Malbun contains good downhill runs for skiers of all skill levels. Good hiking opportunities are also available around Malbun in warmer months. Liechtenstein contains a number of smaller villages that you can explore while admiring the setting.

The Dux chapel is called in German "Wallfahrtskirche Maria zum Trost auf Dux". If you want to visit it, then you will have a nice walk uphill of about 20 minutes. It is located between Hotel Dux and the monastery St. Elisabeth. Just on the parking behind the chapel there is a public toilet. The chapel is very pretty indeed. Around the chapel there is a praying path. On the chapel grounds there is also a statue of Pope Johannes Paul II who visited Liechtenstein on 8th September 1985. Original records of the first building are missing. But the present chapel goes back to 1743 and the tower to 1789. The hall outside goes back to 1829. It's the only chapel in all Liechtenstein which still has its baroque features.

A little place in a little country. Little bit boring but one more country to explain to your friends you have been.

Vaduz is the main city in Liechtenstein. Little bit boring is a place to visit if you want to count one more country in your personal list.
Triesenberg, Liechtenstein
Walking from here back to Vaduz looks easy on the map, but be careful - any trail marked beyond "easy" means you might have to have actual mountain climbing skills and experience - I got caught having to cross and impassable gap in one path and had to decide between risking my life crossing it, or returning an hour back up the mountain to Triesenberg which I eventually did after almost losing my gamble!

Make sure to visit the Vaduz Art museum. http://www.kunstmuseum.li/?page=1lan=de It's got a nice collection of mostly modern art.

Vaduz, the capital of Lichtenstein is just like any other alpine city. The Grand Duke´s residence is nice enough but entry is forbidden. The shopping is alright but nothing special and if you lose your way you will most likely find yourself in Switzerland.

vaduz is a nice little city in lichtenstein. but I didn't like it very much because it's pretty boring and there's not much going on. if you like silence and peace, then vaduz is the right place for you, but if you want some fun then you can't stay there for more than one day.

Near Vaduz stand the geographical center of Europe. A nice place to be in, with a beautiful park. Splendid to spend a day with a pic-nic !

On the way back to Austria from Switzerland, I decided to visit the very small country of Liechtenstein. It's a like a ghost country but I did manage to find an area in Vaduz to eat and even saw a couple of human beings! I recall driving into a parking lot and my car was the only one there! I even bought a red jacket at this store with a real life Liechtensteinian!!! She was quite friendly and obliging to allow a picture with me. Yes, she was born and raised in Liechtenstein, population of 33,000. In fact, to become a citizen of this country, I think the leader of the country has to actually approve you or something like that. I spent all of 3 hours in this country and I think I pretty saw all of it!

Lichenstein is really small, about 1/6 the size of Singapore. Get an "entry" stamp at the post office, if you do not mind the cost. It was $1.50 euro or swiss franc. I can't really remember. If you are thinking about visiting Vaduz palace, well, you will be disappointed. You can only get to as far as the gate. The Prince stays there, so it's not open to the public. But the hike up to the palace is not too bad.
