Lithuania People & Culture

People in Lithuania

The population is estimated to be about 3.5 million.  The population underwent significant changes around the time of WW II, with many deaths, deportations and immigration from Russia.  However, migration from Russia was at a much lower level compared to what happened to the other Baltic states.

Therefore, the ethnic make-up is fairly homogenous, with about 85% being ethnic Lithuanians,  6% being Poles and 5% being Russians.

Vilnius, Dzūkija (Southeastern Lithuania), Lithuania
Vilnius is the capital city of Lithuania. As Lithuania was part of the Sowiet Union, you can find a lot of sowiet constructs, such a Orthodox churches and tipical sowiet block houses. The city center of Vilnius is very old and attractive with lots of restaurant, market, shopping center and church. People are very friendly however and if you speak russian, you don't need english knowledge. :D

In Vilnius (Wilno) there is a very old cemetery - the Rose cementery (cmentarz na Rosie). It is a place of memories, where great people rest. It is a reminder of the great multi-cultural tradition of Poland and Lithuania and also a place where marshall Pilsudzki`s heart are burried.

Trakai, Dzūkija (Southeastern Lithuania), Lithuania
Great place and easy to get there by bus. Trakai Castle is absolutly stunning, you feel like you traveled back to the times of King Arthur and his nights. In the summer evening people having picknics around the castle - view on the sunset is sensational.

Lithuania Religion

It is estimated that, since regaining sovereignty in1991, Roman Catholic is the dominant religion in the country.  The Orthodox Church is the next but distant second largest faith.   A sizeable portion of the population (about 10%) claims no religious affiliation.

Food
Lithuanian food is very hearty, with soups, stews, sausages, smoked meat, potatoes featuring prominently in many dishes.   The food has a traditional, countryside feel, and is not heavily spiced.

  Popular dishes include :
  • Barščiai – a hot borscht or beet sopu which can be served with or without sour cream
  • Šaltibarščiai – a cold borscht
  • šaltiena or košeliena – aspics (savory meats and fishes set in gelatin molds)
  • Blynai – a type of crepe often mixed with potatoes

Nice resort, many spas, nice architecture, good for a relaxing stay. The water park ROCKS! It is a huge indoor complex of 4 swimming pools with lots of activities, laser shows, and over 30 different sauna types.

When you're there, take a few hours trip to Grutas Parkas (approx 10-12 km from Druskinnikai) where all communist statues are placed, it's pretty educating!

I recommend finding the old KGB Museum and visiting it, find out how much of the stuff you heard about the KGB that's actually true about how they treat .. enemies.

Dont forget to visit the old part of the city, it's lovely on a summer day.

Vilnius is amazing in spring or autumt, though you shouldn't be disappointed in summer or even in winter. Old town and Uzupis are best places for a walk, and don't forget to climb up the Gediminas castle hill for a spectacular view of the city panorama.

Lithuania Language

Lithuanian is the official language, and has retained its ancient Indo-European language roots, and has some similarities with Sanskrit.  The words are written in Roman alphabet.

As the country was formerly ruled by Russia and was closely associated with Poland for a few hundred years, Polish and Russian are also widely used.  The law also safeguards language rights of minorities where they form a substantial part of the population.

Panevezys, Auksštaitija (Highlands), Lithuania
If you are biking through Lithuania this is the wrong town to get caught in if your bike has problems. There are three bike shops but none of them actually fix bikes. One says they do on Thursdays but than no one showed up. So, if your bike breaks here take a bus to another town.
