Macedonia, also referred to as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, is a mountainous region in the Balkans. Not surprisingly, it’s a popular skiing and hiking destination. Come to Macedonia to relax, or to visit a number of ancient cities, including Heraclea Lyncestis – founded in the middle of the 4th century in honour of Heracles. Wander around Skopje, the country’s capital to take in a number of old fortresses and war monuments, or go to visit Lake Ohrid – an important cultural center and Episcopal city. Macedonia is the place to go to see a number of multiple religious sites, including Orthodox churches and mosques, to see bazaars, and to appreciate the traces left behind by the various empires through the ages.

07773Skopje rules - my favorite place to vacation when I am working in Helsinki - great food, wonderful Balkan music outdoor nightclubs in the park, and tons of outdoor bars along the river in the new city - all at discount prices, and great food if you love fatty slabs of delicious meat, as I do! Give me Skopje anyday! Macedonia is the only place in Southern Europe worth visiting for rest and relaxation - don't waste time on Greece and Italy!

0139Prilep with its view from the nearby mountain is a nice small city; sights to note are the statue of Alexander the Great next to what looks like an old Roman wall... dine at Macedonia House for an insight into the local culture.
