Travel Tips from people who've been to Polog (Northwestern Macedonia)
is a city in the northwestern part of Macedonia, built on the foothills of Shar Mountain and divided by the Shkumbin River. The city covers an area of 1,080 km2 (417 sq mi) at 468 metres (1,535 ft) above sea level, with a population of 86,580 citizens in the municipality.[1]. It is home to the State University of Tetovo and South East European University. The city of Tetovo is the seat of Tetovo Municipality. The Colored or Painted Mosque (Aladzha or Xhamija e Larme), also known as the Pasha Mosque, was built in 1459 by the Ottoman Turks. The majority of Tetovo's residents are ethnic Albanians. If you think skiing u must visit Kodra e Diellit!!To visit the historical places in Tetovo among which are: Arabati Baba Teqe building (known as "Teqe compund") which is worth visiting since it is an old cultural center built during the 17th century which is historically used as a religious base for the Bekteshi Islamic clerics. The center also serves as a site for cultural and artistic exhibitions over the years.

Turkish bath- is another building which shows that people of this area have fanatically saved and have taken care of the historical buildings. It was also built during the Ottoman Empire! Its a must if you're interested in art. you can see studios of many painters, both professional and amateur, most of their work can be seen in the Tetova Cultural Centre.

Tetovo is albanian enclave in Macedonia, like coming to another country, people there speak mostly albanian. City is  in pretty good economic state, as it is said, that its above average development comes from dirty money made by local mafia, taking action in activities on the "fields" of arms, drugs and prostitution. Though it is worth visiting its old painted mosque and a Bektashi order(branch of islam) tekke(kind of mosque without minaret). An interesting visit is also a street in the center, where one can lay an eye on numerous shops with wedding accessories, mostly dresses.

Tetovo is an Albanian town in FYR Macedonia and was the site of uprisings and shootings back in 2001, which is when I dared visit! There is a fascinating mosque with beautiful colourings outside which will have your camera clicking. Otherwise, the town feels claustrophobic somehow, though the location by the mountain is winning enough. There is also a notable university that has been established here, which I visited as well. Not really worth a detour, but if you are driving this way from Skopje to Ohrid, you might as well stop for some Albanian atmosphere.
