Travel Tips from people who've been to Ohrid
When visiting Ohrid in southern Macedonia, a good option of accommodation is Antonio's Guesthouse. It's less than 10 minutes' walk from the famous Lake Ohrid and offers doubles and triple rooms at 10Euros per person. If you're a single traveller and have a room for yourself, you'll just pay for yourself, and not for the room, unlike other guesthouses or guests. The rooms have satellite tv and look immaculate - Antonio's mother, herself, cleans the rooms!
When coming by bus from Skopje, stop in the city centre (not the bus station) and you will see Tim's Shop, a 24hour convenience store on the corner. Turn left and walk for about 70 metres. The guesthouse is just at the start of a curve. The vans to/from Struga stop right by Tim's Shop. Good tip? (0) Ohrid is a wonderful old city, antic Lihnidos (amphitheater), byzantine basilica, czar Samuilo's fortress (10th or 11th century), countless monasteries and churches from medieval period (I recommend a visit to St.Naum, St.Jovan Caneo, Plaosnik) and Turkish architecture of old town (beneath the fortress). One thing you mustn't miss is a visit to the springs of river Crni Drim, by monastery St.Naum. This river runs trough Ohrid Lake, and by Struga (town located some 20 km from Ohrid), it come out of the lake and flows to the sea. Good tip? (0) A small town with great culture and monuments! The Ohrid Lake is famous for its pearls and the saying is that they can be found only deep in the lake, on its bottom. It is a large lake with very long beaches... Good tip? (0)
