Travel Tips from people who've been to East Coast Malaysia
This is about climbing the Gunung Brinchang, which has a approx. height of 2032 meters. It's the highest mountain in the Cameron Highlands as well as the highest motorable road in Malaysia. If the weather is good you get a great sight of the Cameron Highlands.
The trail is stated as trail 1 in the travel maps you can buy in Tanah Rata or whereever you are staying in the Cameron Highlands. The maps are not much of a help after all, as it's very hard to find the right way, when you are on the trail. With trail 1 you should do just fine, if you want to take another trail I recommend getting a guide, especially for the hard trails. (The easy trails are really NOT worth seeing)
Trail 1 is the best one you can go, just walk up the mountain on the trail (don't do it the opposite way as it's written in some travel maps). At the top follow the street back down to the main road to Brinchang. You'll come along the Tea plantages and they're really worth a visit!

To start the journey to the summit of Gunung Brinchang let a taxi driver take you to the foot of the mountain.
It's a little north from the Cactus Valley (which you should avoid at all costs). There you go straight to the mountain, you can already see the summit with all the antennas. Take the right way into the jungle. There you will go a very steep way through a Fangorn like jungle (if you've seen the Lord of the rings ;) ) It'll take you about 2 - 2 1/2 hours and it's fairly strenous as it goes up all the time.
At the top you can also climb the viewing platform. Now just follow the street down, after an hour you'll come to the tea plantages, and after another 2 hours you'll be back on the main street. Call a taxi or whatever to get back to your residence.
And don't forget to NOT do any guided tours. Just do things on your own in the Cameron Highlands! You can skip the crappy strawberry and honeybee farms alright! Have fun! ;)

Basically to me , Tioman Island is a place to really rest and relax. I've lost count the number of times I've been to the island. The best way to explore the island is to trek. The usual 3days 2nights travel package is not enough to appreciate the beauty of the island. My advise is to stay at least for a week. Be nice to the locals. Be nice to the resort/hotel staffs, make friends with them and treat them with respect, you'll be surprise how much fun they can bring to you. Get back to the basics of simplicity. You'll learn many life lessons along the way. Explore other kampongs/villages.

If you are from the city, my advise for you is to store away your ritz carlton / hilton attitude. However there's one and only 5 stars resort on the island you may enjoy which is the Berjaya Resort. Put aside the 5 stars resort and opt for a mid range room in any kampong/village. Its time to explore and serendipity on the island is ubiquitous.

Here are the list kampongs/ villages/resorts you may enjoy.
1) Kampong Genting  (Island Reef Resort)
2) Kampong Paya (Tioman Paya Beach Resort/ Tioman Paya Resort)
3) Salang
4) Juhara

Wow! This island is awesome!!! There are plenty of places to stay along the shore lines but I decided to get away from the beach houses and go up to the cliff villas! More peaceful and a little more expensive so you don't get every bloke asking if they can crash with you. Otherwise, the snorkling is truely brilliant and island hoping from resort to resort on different islands is what I highly recommend! There are just so many islands and its enough time to spend 2 to 3 days on each then relocate to another island to spread out your experiences. Food at malaysian villas are often western.. sometimes you will get some Thai or Indian which is great as eating Malay's attempts at western food is not what its about to travel to this region.
