Malaysia has a total land area of about 340,000 square kilometres. Geographically it is made up of two parts: the Malaysian peninsula in the south-eastern belly of Asia and, 640 kilometres to the east across the South China Sea, the Eastern Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak.
The Malaysian peninsula starts in the north from the border with Thailand and ends at the State of Johor in the south, where you can cross over to Singapore. A mountain range in the middle of the Malaysian peninsula running from the north to the south up to around Kuala Lumpur nearly divides the east from the west. Along the entire eastern coast of the peninsula are miles and miles of beaches. Sabah and Sarawak also have their share of mountains, with Mount Kinabalu in Sabah being the highest peak in South-east Asia
Off the coast of the Malaysian Peninsula are peaceful and idyllic islands such as Langkawi and Penang (on the west side), and Tioman and Rawa (on the east), where you will be treated to a totally different world. Coral reefs can be found in many coastal areas around Malaysia, especially off the east coast of the peninsula and are favourite spots for diving or snorkling.
