Kampung Kelawat is the gateway to one of the biggest bays in the western coast of Sabah. The sheltered bay is home to the Bajaus, Suluks, Ubians and Dusuns. The Bajaus, Suluks and Ubians live in the water villages of Ambong, Shark Bay (Lok Yu) and Baru-Baru. The Dusuns makes their homes in Tolus and Sondihan. The famous Sabahan rebel Mat Salleh had his main port at Baru-Baru at the turn of the 20th century. This bay was also the scene of an intense aerial bombing by the Allied Forces on anchored Japanese boats during the WWII. The bay is excellent for diving, snorkelling and line fishing. The villagers--mostly Muslims and some Christians--are very friendly. At one of the highest peak, a plaque bearing the inscription "H.M.S Merlin" can still be found. Homestay can be arranged with the Bagahs family at Kg Sondihan, Km 7.2 Jalan Lok Nunuk.
