Semporna isn't the nicest town in the world, but it acts as the gateway to some fabulous islands, like Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai etc. If you have some spare time there then the fish market is worth a look and the mosque is very pretty. It's also well worth taking a wander round the fishing villages which are built on stilts. Here you can really see locals going about their everyday life. People had warned me off going there but I had no hassle. The people were a mixture of friendly or shy but certainly never hostile. The kids were excitable and loved having their photo taken.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Semporna
Pulau Sipadan- a diver's paradise! It's on the Eastcoast of Sabah/ Borneo. Fly from KL to Tawau or Sandakan. Share the taxi with someone to go to Semporna.
Semporna itself isn't very interesting, no big nightlife.
But check http://www.scuba-junkie.com If you like diving or you want to learn, Semporna's a great place for it.
Also Malaysia is very cheap- so you don't need a lot of money to spend some days there, enjoying your daily dives, boat trips, good food and young coconuts. Good tip? (0) Cheapest Way to dive Sipadan & Mabul: Scuba Junkies. But it's a everydays ride all the way from Semporna with Speedboads. Scuba Junkies also got good accomodation and a bar. Good tip? (0) Dragon Inn is a pleasant place to stay for a few nights, it is built on sticks over the water and reasonably priced. Good tip? (0) Recent Updates for Semporna
