A. Many Malaysian drivers are aggressive. As a result, there is a high traffic accident rate in the country, and death and serious injuries are common:
- if you drive, be alert for erratic drivers around you and take action to avoid them.
- if you are a pedestrian, look carefully before you cross the road even if you have right of way at traffic lights.
- if you take a bus or a taxi, and if the driver is driving too fast, try to ask him or her to slow down even though the advice may not be taken kindly.
B. Malaysia is generally safe, but there are occasional reports of violent crimes in daring circumstances in Kuala Lumpur and other cities such as Johor Bahru, including daylight robbery, rapes, carjacking and murders in public places. Auto theft are not uncommon (either involving break-ins only or having the whole car stolen). Hence:
- when you drive, always lock all the car doors.
- if you go into carparks that are not in open view, be alert. For ladies, always be extra careful, even in carparks of upmarket hotels and shopping malls.
- look out for suspicious behaviour.
- don't leave valuables in your car.
- do not have jewelry and other valuables in plain view on yourself or in your car.
- lock you car after parking, and check before you get in.
