Mopti is perhaps one of Mali's most colorful cities since it's a major trading post for "pinasses", the huge merchant dugout boats, and also a hub for weavers and pottery. I would not stay in Mopti - much better off in Sevare nearby; suggest Mac's refuge.

Go to Mopti in central Mali. Just enjoy the River Niger Market, the biggest in the country. And the clay Mosque !

Go then further south via Bandiagra to the Dogon high plateau. Dogon is a highly fascinating people, you will see.

From Mopti to Timbouctou take the pinasse. Its a 3 day, 2 night trip in either private or public boat. a great way to see Bozo fishermen in action and to eat, sleep and wake to the rhythym of the sun!
