There are two main reasons to stop in Sevare, namely because the accommodation is often better and cheaper than in Mopti and because all of the buses leave from here.  Sevare also makes a good starting point for trips to Dogon Country and there are a number of guides in town who speak English and will happily offer you their services!
Travel Tips from people who've been to Sevare
Sevare is a local center close to the Niger Habour Mopti. In contrary to Mopti Sevare offers a lot of good and cheap accomodations. There are also some good "european style restaurants as the "Mankan-Te", which offers a wide range of meals, including 10 vegetarian dishes. For boarding I recommend the "B&B Mankan-Te", a privatly owned, personal, clean and quiet place. The Owner, a German woman lives in Sevare since 1993 an is a very cummunicative and interesting person.

Mac's Refuge! Maybe not for sleeping, it's a bit expensive and there are cheaper options in town, but certainly for the breakfast: pancakes, fruit, …

They also have library, and if you ask you can exchange books, interesting if you're on a long trip.

A good take-off point for Dogon-country.

Sevare is THE place to stay if you are visiting Mopti/Djenne or on your way north to Gao or Tombouctou.  Mac's refuge offers all the comforts that a traveler could desire, and Peace-Corps-Baba has lots of timeless wares to share.
