Mauritius

Mauritius is a unique blend of cultures. This is the place where Europe meets India; Africa meets China. Its diverse heritage is reflected in the festivals, folklore and cuisine of the inhabitants. Mauritian dishes are a delicious fusion of flavours inspired from western colonists, local African ingredients and the aromas and tastes brought by the Chinese and Indian migrants. The Mauritian Sega is a ritualistic dance that celebrates the musical expression of joy and liveliness embraced by slaves during the colonist area, now adopted as the national dance. On the island, a number of beautiful Creole houses can be found beside Chinese pagodas, Indian temples or mosques. All of this on top of a tropical island filled with beautiful botanical gardens known for their indigenous and exotic plants, cascading waterfalls and beautiful beaches.

Pays très pauvre, loin des images paradisiaques des hôtels. Il faut se donner la peine de prendre un taxi pour faire toutes les petites villes, et prendre des petites pensions ou petits hôtels. Certes, vous n'aurez pas de grande et très belle plage, mais les gens sont géniaux! Toute l'île est belle.

Such a small island... so beautifull, in the december - january season! A lot to do and a lot to visit. In the north is the weather and climat very nice. 3h difference with europe. To do some shopping, you go to 'Gran Bay' touristic or to 'Port Louis' where you can find almost everything. Mauritius is also known for their famous extra big beautifull hotels of high quality. There aren't that much farmacies and they do have other products.

Station balnéaire de l'île Maurice, Flic en Flac est situé sur la côte ouest. C'est là que se trouve, par exemple, l'hôtel Sofitel Impérial et le Hilton. Les plages y sont magnifiques.

This is a small sand island that is a little more than an hour west of Rodrigues. Ile Cocos is a nature reserve so there is no overnight camping and you need to have a permit to visit. I really enjoyed walking around the island along it's paths. For some reason it seemed to me that colours were just a bit more intense here. If you do go to Rodrigues island, Ile Cocos is a great little day trip.

Don't forget to visit local supermarkets (not the Port Louis market, that one focusses on tourists ...) to buy a truck load of spices (much cheaper then in europe or anywhere else) You can rent a driver/guide for one day, but these people take you to all kinds of expensive shops where they get a commission, tell them before you leave that you are not interested in that kind of tour (unless of course you like to be ripped off ...)
