Originally part of the Comoros, Mayotte distinguished itself by voting to remain as one of France’s territories. Situated in the north canal of Mozambique, Mayotte is relatively off the beaten track – enough so that the numerous indigenous flora and fauna have remained somewhat undisturbed, allowing visitors to observe and appreciate the pristine natural environment. Comprising of two principal islands – Petite Terre and Grand Terre - Mayotte’s volcanic terrain is rich with species such as the Baobab, Tulip Tree, species of Lemur found only on Mayotte and the familiar comforting fragrances of vanilla and ylang ylang fields. The Mayotte lagoon is famous worldwide as one of the largest lagoons in the world. It is surrounded by 157km of barrier reef in a curious double barrier formation that is found in two other places worldwide. A primarily Muslim country, Mayotte’s culture is nevertheless influenced by Arabian, African and Asian sources.
