Mexico

From extreme desert conditions to white sand beaches in tropical paradise, old colonial towns to even older Mayan ruins hidden within dense jungles, Mexico is a fascinating place to explore, a vibrant nighttime hotspot, and a beautiful country to relax in. Journey through the Yucatan Peninsula to major archaeological sites including Palenque, considered the most beautiful Mayan Ruin to Chichen Itza, one of the best restored and most impressive ruins, or to postcard perfect Tulum, perched on the cliff beside beautiful aqua ocean. The active will want to head to Cozumel, where excellent snorkeling and scuba diving await. At night, Cancun is one of the top places to be, with parties raging through the night, while the really adventurous can camp up high in Mexico’s top peaks, including Pico de Orizaba, (5610 metres) or Popocatepetl (5,452 metres). In Mexico, there is much to discover for any type of style and taste.

Playa del Carmen, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
One of the best beaches ever !!
Puerto Vallarta, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
I've been to PV on Spring Break for the past 5 years and it's worth going back every time! What the city lacks in beaches, it makes up for in nightlife. The Collage foam night is epic and shouldn't be missed and some of the bars on the main strip are lots of fun as well. It's also probably one of the safer Spring Break destinations in Mexico. I've always been with friends, and we've never felt threatened or unsafe.
Isla Mujeres, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
there is a michoacana right next to the basketball-field - the aguas are fine, as usual, but try the licuado de fresa - it is muy sabroso!
Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico
don't accept invites to "a show" cash only - leave everything $100 in the hotel safe when you venture out
Merida, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
okay so I decided while visiting cancun area that i wanted to have a taste of the real mexico, and took a bus from ther about 4 hours, luckily bus had a toilet and my Spanish is good enough. So anyway, Merida is a nice local town, I didn't see another tourist while visiting. Really great mexican food there, there are many nice musuems, spanish sytle homes. I'd recommend it, but not strongly, only unless you are coming near to Merida to see ruins at Coba
Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico
Great for a short day trip if you are in the area.
Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Great beaches, water has no reef. Great night life.
Palenque, Tabasco & Chiapas, Mexico
Palenque was also one of our favorite places! It was so hot when we went - but we brought umbrellas with us and they were so usefull! Don't forget water!
Heroica Nogales, Northwest Mexico, Mexico
There is great shopping here. Most vendors are ready to negotiate.
Tulum, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Chichen-Itza, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
If you travel to the riviera (Cancun or Playa) you defenitely have to visit the Mayan Chichen-Itza ruins. On the way stop at the cenotes, beatifull small "lakes" underground.
Cuernavaca, Mexico City & Surrounds, Mexico
If there is one thing you must do in Cuernavaca that would be to take a stroll through the walkway which runs along side the river/stream. I also thoroughly enjoyed the house belonging to Richard Brady, which is now a museum.
San Jose del Cabo, Baja California, Mexico
Check out the secluded beaches around this area and Cabo San Lucas. I'd avoid Medano Beach in San Lucas but the deserted beaches are amazing!
Puerto Vallarta, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
check out El Cisne!-- its a taco stand
Chichen-Itza, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
If you can, stay nearby and book a cab to take you there early at opening time, before the tour bus hordes arrive from Cancun. Wonderful to be there almost alone.
Puerto Vallarta, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
Very friendly people, great resorts. Beaches tend to be small. Lots of activities to do such as quading.
Palenque, Tabasco & Chiapas, Mexico
Try not to stay in Palenque town. Head out towards the ruins and rent a room or shed there. You will be able to wake up early to the sound of howler monkeys, and be the first in to see the ruins while its still not too hot.
Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Whatever you do, don't go down the slide in Senor Frogs...you end up in a vomit pit.
Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico
A great experience for the shopper, the bargains aren't that great, nor is the food and its not really representative of Mexico, but so much fun for a day trip that we did it 3 times. The Mescal is good but the US only lets you take in 1 litre per entry.
Chetumal, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Go to restaurant 'Misión' for an amazing view of the coast.
Irapuato, Northern Central Highlands, Mexico
Watch out when you buy strawberries in a basket. Only the best ones are at the very top.
Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico
dont stop at a red light...
Mexico, Central North Mexico, Mexico
Chichen-Itza, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
The pyramids are astounding here. There are dozens of vendors most of them have a large amount of Mayan blood in them on the path to the well. Be sure to know a little Spanish, but if you don't most know a fair amount of English.
Mexico, Central North Mexico, Mexico
If you rent a car in Mexico be sure to check the bottom is high! There are so many and very high (topes) bumps in Mexico that we really had difficulties to drive over them - each time I had to stop to drive over them and listen how the bottom scratched!
Xcaret, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
It's a must. go see the dolpins
Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico
Don't take a photo of a Zonkey without asking . You'll start a riot
Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
In the words of a wise friend, "Drink all the time. Keep the buzz going. It's a great huge party. But DON'T go in the ocean while you're drinking! Just DON'T!"
Mexico, Tabasco & Chiapas, Mexico
The people there are so nice! The weather is awesome, especially if you like the beach. At night time you'll be awakened by thunderstorms. Enjoy the scenery, but by all means, wear appropriate sunscreen, or you'll regret it! Try the mexican cornbread pancakes! YUMMY!
Tulum, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
It's a beautiful city.
Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico
watch out for pick pocketers and dont drink the water and travel with a guy
Isla Mujeres, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
La Isla Mujeres, or the Isle of Women, is a fun little island for a day-trip while you're in Cancun. It's not nearly as crowded or loud as downtown Cancun is. There are also and abundance of hand carved and painted wooden animals, fish, turtles and people which make great, yet inexpensive, gifts.
Puerto Vallarta, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
Make sure to go parasailing.
Chetumal, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
If you take the bus to Belize from here be prepaired to drive 6 hours in a "chicken bus" an old american schoolbus (for kids) with tiny and narrow seats!
Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico
be careful when you go to any resturaunts in tj as when you walk in you are happily greeted with "complimentry shots" and tequila being poored down your throat.. these drinks are not free and no body will tell you that until you get the bill so dont have 10 shots thinking there free!!! [as we did]
Isla Mujeres, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
the funnest way to see this island is to rent a golf cart for the day and zip around. dont miss out on el garafon and its zipline and snorkeling!
Puerto Vallarta, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
the best excursion to go on is to Las Caletas ... the water there looks like the Caribbean! Take a stroll down the malecon at night ... the place really comes alive.
Chichen-Itza, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
if u can, go see the ruins on june 21. the solar eclipse casts a shadow of a serpant down the steps of kukulkan pyramid! the mayan architecture is absolutely amazing!
Palenque, Tabasco & Chiapas, Mexico
the most gorgeous maya ruins i've seen yet! the size of these pyramids is astounding! they're located in the mountains, so the scenery views are amazing. u can also climb EVERY pyramid ... unlike chichen itza where u can only climb the main one.
Tulum, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
small, but pretty ruins. there's not too much to see ruin-wise compared to other ruins in the area, but they are located on top of a cliff overlooking the caribbean sea, so that makes up for it. the view is awesome. there's also a nice beach there too.
Mexico City, Mexico City & Surrounds, Mexico
buldog cafe the coolest place in town- young people, live rock bands. expensive cover (27us$)- but cool drinks
Rosarito, Baja California, Mexico
There's an old mission that has been converted into bungalows with a nice restaurant. The bungalows are right on the edge of a cliff down to a dark sandy beach. You'll drift to sleep with the sound of crashing waves.
Mazatlan, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
If you are going here on a cruise, take a chance and do some research ahead of time for the best tours of the city. We found a guy on the internet (whose name escapes me--but i'm sure if I found him you will be able to) who showed up in an open air bus and gave us a wonderful tour of teh city for much less than we would have paid the cruise lines. The best part was, he was a local guy so we got much more of a local taste...literally...we got to visit a family bakery and taste their wares, visit peoples homes and see how they are rebuilding some of the inner city areas into major homes...it was one of the best cruise shiip tours we ever had....becasue it wasn't a typical "white bread" cruise ship tour!
San Fernando, Northeast Mexico, Mexico
Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Chichen Itza is a must see. Don't miss it.
Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
go to the outdoor markets and go swimming alot
Mexico City, Mexico City & Surrounds, Mexico
Save time for museum hopping. There are more museums in Mexico City that you could possibly count. We found gallery after gallery just walking down the street. Admission was as little as a dollar.
Puerto Nuevo, Baja California, Mexico
You can bargain for your dinner. You should be able to get a lobster dinner with the fixings and margaritas for $10 a person. Don't settle on the first offer.
San Cristobal de Las Casas, Tabasco & Chiapas, Mexico
San Christobal is an incradible city with a lot of colours and very nice architectur, people are very shy but nice and more typical and poor than on the caost. there is a lot of street markets where you can buy different kind of food. it's also very catholic, there is very nice church that you can visit.
Puerto Vallarta, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
Pack LOTS of sunscreen...the sun can be brutal down there.
Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico
Be aware of your surroundings and go with a group
Palenque, Tabasco & Chiapas, Mexico
You need to stay a nigth in El Panchan... it is directly before you enter the pyramides of Palenque, in the middle of the rain forest.
Chichen-Itza, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
climb to the top. dont fall in the cistern.
Tihuatlan, Central Gulf Coast, Mexico
These are some incredible ruins off the beaten path in Veracruz. Give yourself enough time to explore all day.
Guadalajara, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
be sure to visit Tlaquepaque nearby
Bahia de los Angeles, Baja California, Mexico
South of Ensenada, you'll find this quiet fishing village on the Sea of Cortez. It's a great beach for fishing, kayaking, or just sleeping under the stars. You can also go to see the 10,000 year old Indias de Montevideo rock paintings, but make sure to bring plenty of water for your hike! You can get a good meal at Guillermo's.
San Miguel de Cozumel, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Some of the BEST diving in the World! Make sure you go out for a night dive. WOW! What a whole new diving experience. The water is so clear and the sights are so beautiful.
Guanajuato, Northern Central Highlands, Mexico
Have to go to the town square for local art and Senor Frongs for frosty beverages.
Zihuatanejo, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
La Casa que Canta: for romantics!
Palenque, Tabasco & Chiapas, Mexico
Puerto Vallarta, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
You a birdwatcher? About 10 miles south of PV is a river called Rio Tomatlan. Sit on the north bank and look across to the steep south bank.. fabulous birds will appear.
Merida, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Mérida... please go to Paseo Montejo, it's a beautiful street! Downtown is also pretty and elegant. Don't forget to eat cochinita or lechón, or basically anything from the Yucatec Cuisine. Great place to visit!
El Ocote, Oaxaca State, Mexico
Hahaha, what do you want me to say! It's a beautiful natural place, far away from any sense of urban sprawl. Not turistic, completely off the track, but with WONDERFUL people
San Miguel Sola de Vega, Oaxaca State, Mexico
Well, Sola de Vega is between Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido. It has a pretty church, nothing really fancy but it's fine to go and see... however, this place is NOT turistic
Monterrey, Northeast Mexico, Mexico
Monterrey! Now we're talking!!! The most modern city in Mexico, a lot of places to hang out and party. A LOT of entertainment alternatives. Definitley a place to go. DON'T expect to see a poor, third-world place: Monterrey is the elite of Mexico and Latin America.
Torreon, Northeast Mexico, Mexico
CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!!!! Hahahaha, I was born there... well, modern industrious city in Mexico. Not very touristic, but tons of friendly people. It doesn't has a lot of 'attractions', but you can always see and have fun.
Chetumal, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
New town... faaaaaaaaaaaaar away from Mexico City, or Guadalajara, but close to Belize, Cancún, and a lot of interesting places. The town itself is not charming, but it's worth a visit
Colima, Western Central Highlands, Mexico
Pretty small city... not very toursitic, but you can find a very calm and cool mood in this town.
San Lorenzo Texmelucan, Oaxaca State, Mexico
Well, this place is definitley way inside the mountain range in Oaxaca. Very nice people, but NOT touristic
Chiapa de Corzo, Tabasco & Chiapas, Mexico
Some nice things to see around, but the most important in my opinion is the place where you can take the boat to 'Cañón del Sumidero'. That is definitley a MUST SEE.
Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca State, Mexico
Hippietown! A real mexican seashore town, with a very cool atmosphere. Even though it's growing, it still has it's essence. That's real Mexico, not touristic resorts!
Guadalajara, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
Guadalajara, that´s the best place to go in Mexico. ALL the 'mexican' traditions (tequila, mariachi, etc) were originated in the state where Guadalajara is the capital. Big, modern city, it has A LOT of alternatives, and Mexico's prettiest girls!!!!!!
Tulum, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Tulum, well, the ruins are not as charming as Chichen Itzá or Uxmal, but it's setting, by the seashore in the Caribbean, makes this place unique. It is a MUST SEE
Cuilapan de Guerrero, Oaxaca State, Mexico
Nice old church and monastery, near Oaxaca city, great for a one day visit, along to some other places in the way.
Chichen-Itza, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
I've been to Tikal, Copán, Palenque, Yaxchilán, Bonampak... and Chichen Itzá are probably the most impressive mayan ruins you can find. However, expect to find a lot of people, and, unfortunately, tons of them without any interest at all.
Isla Mujeres, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Nice place, specially if you wanna get away from the 'noise' of Cancun. Pretty beaches, a little bit more calm than Cancun
Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico
dont eat the food and haggle when buying stuff
Uxmal, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Impressive mayan ruins, nice place, nice show at night. Less crowded than Chichen Itzá. Worth a visit
Tantoyuca, Central Gulf Coast, Mexico
Whenever you go Tantoyuca, have a coffee over there. Ok, alright. Veracruz as a whole is a great place to have a coffee, however, if you come from the North, Tantoyuca would be one of the first Veracrucian towns to visit.
Guadalajara, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
I love this town; I only spent a few days there in 2002 visiting a friend who was working for the UN, but was charmed by the look and feel of the place, and it's proximity to great hang gliding and para gliding. I would love to go back again someday for a few days if ever traveling through Mexico. Completely untouristed at the time and a side a of mexico that was completely distinct from anything that I had seen closer to the US border or historic touring routes.
Guadalajara, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico

Chichen-Itza, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Don't miss the pyramids. If you think we're advanced... you haven't seen what the Mayans have created. Absolute perfection.
Torreon, Northeast Mexico, Mexico
Few Americans really evver see Mexico like I have. 3 hours from any shoreline and in the heart of a dusty valley, Torreon and Gomez Palacio is home to some of the most beautiful and hospitible people in the world. Enjoy some steak and rancheros.
Merida, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Hele leuke gemoedelijke stad!
Mexico City, Mexico City & Surrounds, Mexico
Puerto Vallarta, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
If you're after quiet beaches and don't mind walking (20-30 mins), head south down the Playa los Muertos, there's a path over a rocky headland, keep on walking to a number of small coves and beaches.Food, one or two blocks behind the beach on Basilo Badillo in the Romantic Zone next door to Cafe de Olla (great Mexican food by the way) you can eat Tacos el Pastor, street food at its very best.Bar, Coco Tropical at sunset, wish I was there!
Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Check out the restaurant El Parillo - the food is authentic and delicious and the service was so friendly! We liked Isla Mujeres the best...downtown Cancun is kind of crazy!
Isla Mujeres, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Isla Mujeres is beautiful. If you're looking for charm away from the hustle and bustle and buses, crowded street and noise in Cancun, this is the place! Charming, quiet, with great flea market shops on the plaza and quaint restaurants all over the place. Private beach on the far side of the island...Great shopping deals here....
Mexico City, Mexico City & Surrounds, Mexico
Everybody says Mexico City is an extremly dangerous city, but from my experience I can tell you, that as long as you don't run around in expensive clothes and shoes without any jewelry, noboy will do you any harm. Actually it's the opposite: Mexicans are warm hearted people how are very proud of their country, and especially of Mexico City, and like to share their knowledge of it with everybody! Very important to see, besides the usual things you can read in every guide, are the different markets in different parts of the town (especially the "TEPITO" market. Also very interesting are the little Taco Bars in the streets. Don't think about what to eat. Just eat and then ask!
Mexico City, Mexico City & Surrounds, Mexico
It is the centre of Mexico. The top in art, culture, economy, and everything you can imagine lives here. Unfortunately, pollution and public safety problems undermine it's awesome touristic potential.
Mexico City, Mexico City & Surrounds, Mexico
City metro is cheap and easy to get around, buy a few tickets at a time as it's the same price to go 1 stop or 10. Saves lining up as can get very busy.
San Cristobal de Las Casas, Tabasco & Chiapas, Mexico
go for july fair and have fun!!!
Acapulco de Juarez, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
Great architecture. Great beaches and food.
San Lucas, Baja California, Mexico
San Lucas, Baja California, Mexico
Very nice resorts and beaches. Not the "usual" mexico.
San Juan Teotihuacan, Mexico City & Surrounds, Mexico
Take your time walking and climbing around. Afterwards have some goat (cabrito) at one of the places around the site.
Xelha, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
A resort, I'm not sure why they call it a city, but the destruction of it after Hurricane Emily made me happy.
Isla Cozumel, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Don't forget to visit the Chankannab and Xel-Ha lagoon on the continent. They are like natural aquariums, and in the latest you can even swim in.
Zayulilla, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
You have to eat at Don Pedro's. Folks make the trip out to Sayulita just to go to lunch there. Incredible chef and great atmosphere. Also try a horseback ride on the beach.
Culiacan, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
Culiacán is NOT turistic... is a modern city, somehow big, with some atractive features... and probably the prettiest women in Mexico
San Lucas, Baja California, Mexico
The town is pretty nice with lots of great resorts, though tourist go to Cabo Wabo for a fun scene.
Zayulilla, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
Mazatlan, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
must eat giant shrimp DELICIOUS
Acapulco de Juarez, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
Acapulco is a popular tourist destination and frankly, it's fantastic! Just remember to watch out for petty thieves, don't stay too much in the sun (use lots of sun block!) and be mindful of scorpions and other stingers biters!

Go Parasailing. And to Senior Frogs. Oh, i miss Mexico!!

Mexico City, Mexico City & Surrounds, Mexico
Best place to listen to the Mariachi bands is in the plaza Garibaldi, make sure you go there with local, as it is also a high crime area. Another local place is floating garden of Xochimilco, a must see, again go with locals.
Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
when traveling around Cancun learn to say " I don't speak Spanish" in a language other than English. That way the hundreds of people trying to sell you time shares or side trips will leave you alone.
Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico
When in Tijuana, watch for bad drivers who will spalsh water on you while you wait to cross the street. Also, be wary of young children on the street who will follow you around begging for money. It is truly an adventure!
Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Recommend GR Solaris. Go all-inclusive.
Playa del Carmen, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Do go cave snorkeling Don't go with EDventures...you will get killed on the mexican highway trying to drive to tulum

Guanajuato, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Go to Isla Mujeres instead, cheaper and super close, plus there is a topless beach. Cancun is just too expensive for the frugal traveller.
Isla Mujeres, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Great place to visit in Mexico. Cheap alcohol, food, lodging, ferries to Cancun, and a whole lot more authentic than Cancun.
Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico
Everyone needs to find their way to Tijuana sometime in their one lifetime.
Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
If someone wants to show you their tattoo shop upstairs a liquer store...DO NOT GO!! There is no tattoo shop. It is a drug den with tons of photos of nude american girls that looked stoned out of their mind. Also, go to Pat O'Brien's, Dady Rock, and Coco Bongo.
Mexico City, Mexico City & Surrounds, Mexico
Alameda park is a beautiful little park with fountains, street performers, vendors selling all kinds of crafted items and food, and the flora is breathtaking. It is next to the Palacio de Bellas Artes. This park was the first in the city and dates to the 16th century.
Ciudad Juarez, Mexico City & Surrounds, Mexico
Went on some mission work here. Building a sunday school room for a poor church and doing some sunday school leasons. Definetly a place to watch your wallet and being the socond murder capital of the world never go anywhere alone, male or female! A real eye opener.
Puerto Vallarta, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
Where Terminator was filmed, but after a 30 minute drive or so out of the city you can find the forest area where it was filmed and right next to that is a very beautiful natural waterfall that you can swim in, almost paradise!

San Cristobal de Las Casas, Tabasco & Chiapas, Mexico
Want to go out and drink some cocktails? Go zo El Zirko or La Revolución. You buy one drink, you get one free! And there's a little person that's helpfull as hell! :-) Watch out for Louis! Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
pretty however bery americanised. very expensive too. if you want to see real mexico you must travel outwith cancun
Catemaco, Central Gulf Coast, Mexico
One thing you must do in Catemaco is take an excursion to see the endangered monkeys. These little creatures have been transported from Vietnam to Catemaco, Mexico in hopes to save their species. The best part of the excursion - except seeing the monkeys, is the boat ride there, where you get to drink natural spring water from that region. After one cup, you will feel so energized, like you slept for 10 hours.
Merida, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Dubrovnik is absolutley one of the most beautiful cities that I have ever been to. The sea (NOT the OCEAN) that surrounds it is a beautiful aqua green colour and the beaches.........there are so many of them and you can literally walk for hours and never run out of the pebbly white surface that gives you a mini massage as you walk accross it.
Veracruz, Central Gulf Coast, Mexico
The food in this city (my second motherland) is absolutley fabulous. For a nice breakfast, lunch, dinner or when you get the munchies after a night of partying, you should get yourslef a plate of tacos al pastor (pork tacos) and a bog cup of horchata (a coconut, vanilla and honey drink).
Taxco el Viejo, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
Go (climb!) to the center, visit old churches, buy silver jewelery!
Coba, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
I you like walking it's good place for you, if you like walking in the jungle, when tere is hot and you are sweating - it's just great place for you:) Mayan's buildings in mexican jungle-nice,but these are not the most beautiful in the world.
Puerto Vallarta, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
A very nice city to stay on vacations. Excent food and drinks at Resorts.
Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
If you find yourself in Cancun, but you absolutely despise the drunken college kids and the party scene, this tip is for you. You should take a whole day excursion trip to one of the oldest and most important archaeological sites in the Maya people's history - Chichen Itza. It is about 4 hour bus ride if you travel by a Gray Hound-type bus. If you get one of the locals to take you, it is a slightly less comfortable 2 hour ride in a beat up van or a car, wihout air conditioning. During the day, you should try to see all of the ruins and durng the night, you should stay for a spectacular fire show, performed on the main structure in the place. The cost is about 60 dollars American and worth every penny. Again, if you go with a local and don't book a tour, the price significantly decreases to 20 dollars per person
Minatitlan, Central Gulf Coast, Mexico
Mexican people have a very interesting tradition that they perform during the New Year period. First, all of the boys dress up as old men and go dancing in the streets and it is a custom to give them money. Then, on New Year's Eve, all of the families bring out a doll which resembles an old man, stuffed with fire crackers. Ten seconds before the New Year arrives, they put it on the street, light it on fire, so it explodes exactly at midnight. This is to symbolizes old year leaving and taking all the negative things with it. WARRNING: From 12 until 12:30 on that day, do NOT go anywhere, as people also fire their guns. There was an incident of a very young girl being killed a few years ago.
Puerto Vallarta, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
One fun thing to do in Puerto Vallarta is to go and visit a tequilla disitllery plant. While you get to learn a great deal about tequila, how it is made, its origins and how a real tequila should taste like, you also get to try flavor infused tequilas - a house specialty - like chocolate, mint, pineapple, almond.....list goes on and on. At the end of the tour, you may receive a free sample.

Doesn't live up to it's reputation.
Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca State, Mexico
This is the best place in Mexico to buy woven textiles - especially colorful handmade rugs. Literally every family in this village has a tradition of weaving and with the dollar still strong against the peso, it's a great time to buy unique textile art.

Cancun, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Beautiful beaches, but extremely touristic. If you like touristic places, you'd love it. If you prefer something more relaxed, Isla Mujeres or Tulum could work.

Pretty when the lake has an acceptable water level. Nice food, nice sidetrip from Guadalajara.

San Miguel de Cozumel, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Tulum, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Probably the most beautiful beach in the world. If you can, rent a beach hut just south of the ruins. Be aware that its a long way to town and you'll probably need to get taxis everywhere. There's not that much to do in Tulum, but Cenotes diving is highly recommended. Diving in crystal clear freshwater caves is an experience not to be missed. I used CDC (Cenotes Dive Center) and they were excellent; good equipment, good English speakers.
Los Mochis, Central Pacific Coast, Mexico
