Travel Tips from people who've been to Ensenada
I am going to ensenada twice a week...i HATE it!!! Im working on the cruise ship and this port is the biggest dissappointment ever...if you want to go to mexico and really feel it just choose some other place to go like cozumel,or chichen itza for example. Anyway, when you are going to ensenada, you can do and see very few things, and here they are(im saying very few because almost every street is leading to part of the town with really cheap porno clubs and that is the place you dont want to go even if you are type of the person who likes that kind of things) if you want to have fun in the bars you have papas and beers, and mango mango, personally i prefer the first one,it is nicer, more people is going there and it is quite affordable,if you are woman DO NOT go on any of these places alone!
ok lets keep on moving...if you want to eat in ensenada you will see a lot of small restaurants, offering discounts to the cruisers and other tourists but what i am doing is this,i always go to eat only on the places where locals are eating, maybe you will have to walk a bit further but you will avoid overpriced places with bad chinese or mexican food.
Anyhow, when you are on the way to ensenada, bring the book, and go to relax on the pool side of st. Thomas hotel, after all that is the best place to be in that town...
and when you come back tell me if you had a good time... Good tip? (0) If ever you are entertaining surfing guests, and the surf is 2 ft flat on the mainland, you can charter a boat for Todos Santos; I liked Killerz. Careful! it gets 40ft+ but I liked it at head and a half (when lake flat on Mainland in July). Killerz is a water slide for grownups. Its less than 40 yards (meters) from break to cliff (at head high), but there is only a right, which creates the mega rip. It did not disappoint but our non surfing friends were seasick (surfers are in the water not on the boat!) and not impressed with walking around on a bare rough rock, where sand is a luxury. We negociated $150 for six people (2002), got to the island in 25 min. and made it back at nightfall in 2.5 hours, on a limping engine...(Mex Style) Ensenada is the home of Paper Mache Themed night clubs, and the burning plastic bag smell. Good tip? (0) Park your car at the US border in San Ysidro and walk across the border with your wheelie bag for a weekend. Ask for the "auto bus" station. For about $30 you can get a round trip ticket on a clean bus with movies that are sometimes in English with Spanish subtitles. Fabulous ride along a spectacular coast. Nice not to have to pay attention to the roads and just enjoy the view.
The bus ends in Ensenada on the outskirts. Pull your wheelie bag and just follow the crowds towards the tourist area of the city - about a 20 minute walk - or grab a taxi. All the hotels are pretty centrally located in this area. In Mexico always find out how much "Quanto por favor?" before getting into a cab.
