Midway Island

Midway Island, most famously known for being the staging ground for the Battle of Midway fought between the Americans and the Japanese navies in World War II, is a small atoll located in the middle of the Pacific between North America and Asia. The landscape has been dramatically altered, unfortunately, by the addition of numerous airstrips and roads. In fact, it looks pretty crazy aerially. It is US administered and inhabited by a small permanent population.

The water is so clear you can see for miles. Its that gorgeous aqua blue color. The sand is a fine white coral. One down side the white sand is highly reflective of the sun and after just walking down to the water..

Midway is all but overrun with albatross--they're loud and territorial, so be sure to bring earplugs if you're planning to sleep, and keep those fingers tucked away. Also, resist the temptation to re-enact the Monty Python "Albatross!" bit - believe me, the locals have heard it.
Good tip?
