Once the capital city and administrative centre of the Mongol Empire of Genghis Khan, Karakorum is situated in the Orkhon valley at the crossroads of the Silk Road. Thought to be founded in 1220, it remained in power for about 39 years. Archaeological findings include cauldrons, wheel brushings, ceramics, silk, coins, and more. The city was later destroyed, and the materials were used to build Mongolia's first Buddhist monastery - Erdene Zuu in 1586.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Karakorum
Karakorum is great to visit for a couple of hours and to check it off the places to see but with the surrounding village it does take away the mystery of the ancient past.
From here you can make you way to Tsetserleg's Ger to Ger Routes: http://www.gertoger.org
Or make your way S to Aravher, Saihan Ovoo, Bayanzag and to the S Gobi Desert - the roads this way are generally better than the rest if your must go south Good tip? (0) This is the old capital of Mongolia. You don't miss here the Erdene Zuu. It is the "head monastery" of Mongolia. It's a huge compound — a square nearly half a kilometre a side, surrounded by a wall topped with stupas — but it's now mostly empty, with only a few scattered temples remaining. Most were destroyed in 1937. Good tip? (0) This pretty obvious tip is to visit the temple are and it stupas. Otherwise maybe a nice sunset? Good tip? (0) Recent Updates for Karakorum
