The British territory of Montserrat received international recognition back in 1995 when the Soufriere Hills Volcano erupted and buried the capital of Plymouth in ash. Subsequent eruptions have destroyed Plymouth and two-thirds of the island remains off limits. The population of the island has been reduced by a similar amount and government offices have been relocated to Brades.

The volcano has settled down to the point that eruptions are fairly low-key. Occasionally volcanic rocks roll down the side of the volcano and there have been some ash eruptions that have covered populated areas with a light dusting, but for the time being the danger is low. There is a good chance that you will be able to witness some form of volcanic activity and you can visit the Montserrat Volcano Observatory for additional information.about the volcano. Jack Boy Hill offers a good vantage point to view the volcano.

Montserrat has some excellent diving opportunities if you want to do something other than volcano watching. Since the volcanic eruptions greatly reduced tourism, this is your opportunity to visit a typically beautiful Caribbean island without the masses of people that usually are there as well.

Gingerbread Hill is a superb place to stay on this lovely tropical isle.  David and Clover Lea are wonderful hosts.  The island has little or no crime, the people are friendly, PLUS, you get a volcano!  Tge island does not appear to be a party spot.  It has empty beaches.  :)
Good tip?
