Questions answered about visiting Casablanca
Will be on a cruise and will be stopping in Recife, Natal, and Salvador in Brazil, Cape Verde Islands (Porto Grande), Canary Islands (Lanzarote), and Casablanca, Morocco. Am interested in knowing which places it is possible to visit by walking and without a guide. If a guide is better, do you know of any who are good. We would rather not go with the cruise tours. Whats the cheapest way out of the Casablanca Morocco airport (CMN) and into the city. I think a Taxi would be the most costly. Casablanca Ask a travel question about Casablanca
Travel Tips from people who've been to Casablanca
La Scala restaurant in Casablanca is a a place where you can eat good food all day.
Set in the old city walls the restaurant is set in beautiful gardens with Moroccan style decor.
The set breakfast menu at £5.00 is great value including fruit juice, fruit salad, mint tea, pastries, traditional omelette and lots of bread.
The lunch and evening menus have delicious fish and meat choices and of course tagines. Alcohol is not served but the range of fruit juices is fantastic. The atmosphere is relaxed, the service attentive and the staff speak both French and English. The clientele vary, it is a comfortable place to eat alone but also ideal for groups, couples and children as there are lots of separate dining areas. There is a mix of locals, tourists and business people depending on the time of day.
Good tip? (0) I arrived here on my 19th birthday. Wow!! The old city of Casablanca (Ancienne Medina) is conveniently placed just off the main town square from where all avenues radiate, and close to the sea. But as you enter, you will see that it is not all that old after all in contrast to other Moroccan cities. The houses of Casablanca Ancienne Medina often have a form and size which would have made them natural elements in the "new" parts (Nouvelle city) of many other Moroccan cities. But still, it is very nice, even if it is very small. The best parts of the old city I saw were made up of shopping areas, where all types of products were sold. I saw the less visited quarters, the areas where people lived where colours and shapes and curves brought me far away from elegance of downtown Casablanca. Good tip? (0) You will never get a real bargain in the old or new Medina, but trying to get the price down as much as possible can be real good fun (if you're in the mood) I found the new Medina (Habous) a bit tame, and eventhough I didn't see any other tourists the day I went there, they seemed to cater more to tourist's tastes than in the old Medina. While you are there, don't stick to the shopping area though. The little white washed streets are really charming and peaceful Good tip? (0)
