To get from the airport to Inle Lake takes about 1.5 hours (you fly into Heho).  The cost of a taxi ranges from 15000 - 20000 kyat.  Taxis will usually let you share the cost with other passengers and make multiple stops to different hotels / hostels.

It's cheaper to do the return trip to the airport from town.

Tachileik is the best town in northern thailand...of course it is in the shan-state - but you can visit easy crossing the border in Maesai - the market and the food just great
