Travel Tips from people who've been to Windhoek & Central Namibia
Joe's Beerhouse is a wonderful place at night to eat some Zebra or a german schweinshaxe outdoors around fireplaces. Namibian lager beer is great. Good tip? (+1) My fellow travelers and I had only stopped in Windhoek for a couple of hours to do some shopping and banking and internet. However in that amount of time two of my friends had an incident happen at two separate ATMs. Apparently they were taking money out when someone stepped up from behind them, pushed some buttons, took out their debit card, slide the debit card up the sleeve of his shirt, and then put it back in the ATM and took off. It happened so fast and the person came out of nowhere that my friends had no chance to react or even know what happened. Needless to say they cancelled their cards and tried to report it to the local police but they didn't really seem to care. So just be careful when withdrawing money and always keep a backup credit card just in case. Good tip? (0) If you are backpacking and intend to go from Gobabis to Maun, it will not be an easy task. It is like a short journey, I would say, once there is no public transportation to there. The only way is hitching. First of all, make sure you already have Botswana's currency, because you will need money there and there is no place to exchange after leaving Gobabis. At Gobabis' exit to botswana border, there is a gas station where you can try to get a lift, it is a safe place, ask the attendant to help you. Do not cross the border whether it is dark, unless your ride is till Maun. Always travel during the day by safety. The drivers expect you'll pay them for the lift, so you must make a deal before get in the truck. There are many trucks departing at dawn, so do not worry if you have to wait so long. Good tip? (0)
