Nauru is the world’s smallest island nation and once had extensive phosphate reserves that were formed from a combination of limestone and bird droppings. Mining activities have now depleted the phosphate reserves, destroyed most of the soil and vegetation on the island and rendered 80% of the island uninhabitable. With greatly diminished income from mining and limited agricultural prospects, Nauru relies on foreign aid to survive. There is plenty of marine life in the area, but the waters are considered too dangerous for diving. Few tourists visit Nauru, but the giant pits and pinnacles of the phosphate mining sites (often described as a moonscape) can be an interesting sight.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Nauru
What a wonderfully isolated place. Here you will feel you are at the end of the world. Go to Menen Hotel, it is the only decent option and has good views of the sea. From there hire a tour which will take all of 3 hours (max) to show you the island, included the semi-abandoned phosphate mines, the port, the so-to-speak capital. You can walk on your own to the parliament building and the other central places near the airport. The airport itself is a hoot, especially when the plane comes and all the kids are happily waving. By the airport there is a Chinese place making great dumplings. Yummy!
