A small, uninhabited US controlled territory located between Haiti and Jamaica, the island is currently a National wildlife refuge that is closed to the public, though special permits can be obtained. At one point the island was open for hikes and offshore excursions. The island was historically used for guano mining from 1856 to 1901, but is now protected due to its biodiversity. Some 15 island species are endemic to the island, including a number of snails, lizards and plants. While small in size (5 square kilometers), the island is ancient – being formed over 5 million years ago, giving ample time for its isolated evolution to occur.
